Doing away with the itchiness of yam

Most Indians avoid yam and I too most of the time as it causes itching of hands and also the throat after eating. While scrolling through some youtubes I found the lovely method of doing away with its itchy nature. I boiled it in vinegar for sometime, drained the water, smashed it added rice powder and gram flour some spices and fried them into chops. We had it as a side item for our lunch. Both my son and me liked it. What are the ways you cook yam?

I only eat yams and sweet potatoes raw. I don't like their flavor when they've been cooked. If a food makes your throat itchy, it usually means you have an allergy to that food.

@aninditasen Yams shouldn't be "itchy".

Yams are itchy. We make a chutney in Bengal out of yam but it's very hot as we have to add lot of green chillies and mustard paste.

I have never had a bad reaction to a yam, and I don’t know else who has either. I had no idea people from India did; that’s fascinating.

@aninditasen Oh, it’s a different kind of yam; that makes sense. I should have guessed that!

Interesting - we have yams but have not gotten itchy from them. We will peel and slice . . . put olive oil and ginger powder and bake.

Wow you are a great cook Anindita..what a great idea to use the vinegar to balance out the PH of the Yam and quell the itch. Well no problems here with itch..so usually I just boil them and add butter salt and pepper. Eat them like mashed spuds. Or at the American holiday of Thanksgiving, we bake the in the oven with sugar, cinnamon and add marshmallows for topping..then they are sticky sweet.

It's grown extensively in India as the climate supports its growth.
