Top Up Hell
Phoned EE for what should have been a simple £5 top up on my Nokia non smart phone non I phone PAYG phone that I only use for calls and texts and only top up about every 3 to 4 months.
Put on hold for an eternity listening to awful music. Got cut off after ten minutes of voice messages interrupting what sounded like K-Tel Sounds Of the 70’s, to tell me they’d try to talk to me within a minute. Rang back, ten more minutes of waiting but finally got through to a human(ish) chap who told me he’d sent a code by text to my phone to read back to him. Told him I couldn’t read the text without hanging up from the call first. He asked me why my phone wasn’t a smart phone which can do both simultaneously. I asked him if I could make a note of the code and ring him back, to which he told me the code would change with my next call.
He then asked me the date of my last top up. Told him I couldn’t remember the date off hand. He asked me to say roughly, suggesting I say if it was in the last 90 days. I said I thought it was but apparently it was longer even than that, at which point he told me he would have to end the call as I couldn’t answer his security questions. He did however give me the web site address to do the top ups on without such stupid questions or codes and I finally got a £5 on my phone that could last me into the Autumn.
Buddha on a bike. Punished for lack of a smart phone. The photo is my phone

@Hannihar Felt like I was phoning a computer help-line to ask about problems with my Abacus

They always give for granted that you are a young person using the latest model of smartphone.
I hate their procedures. I also go to the online site to recharge, at least I avoid "humans"(?) who cannot even understand what you are explaining them.

@AmbiePam I worked for 18 months for a phone sales company - had to push established customers to get them to upgrade - hated every minute of it there

Nokias are fabulous phones though so durable and long lasting.

We go through this ALL THE TIME! Because we don't have smartphones we are constantly punished. There are all kinds of perks and freebies that are available to those with smartphones that we are not privy to. I think it's unfair; but who am I to protest? I'm glad you finally got your top-up taken care of. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

@LindaOHio They react to me like disbelief, like I am in the Amish or something, and probably insist on horse and cart while refusing to trust the evil of the motor car riding

I hate dealing with anything about a phone on the phone.
