What a Deal!

I used to love the state fair. I went every year. I loved the lights, the rides, the game noises, all of it pretty much. I traveled with the carnival back in the 70s and enjoyed it thoroughly. Back a few years(probably early to mid-90s) my daughter and I worked at the fair at the admission gate taking tickets. It was taking tickets but it was also policing people who might try to get in free. We had all manner of incidents. One night a guy just went walking in through the front gate like he was determined to get somewhere and didn't even look at either of us. He had no ID or anything. I went after him. He said he was one of the head honchos working in the Fair office. Ya, sure. Anyone could say that and they were supposed to have a Fair ID on their person. He did not. So I took him over to the office. They quickly told me he was with the Fair and I felt like a total schmuck. I apologized and went back to my job at the front gate. About half an hour later I was called up to the Fair office. I was not a little nervous and thought sure my job was ending. I was probably going to get fired for calling a head honcho on the carpet for not wearing his ID. The guy I had accosted and another man called me into a back office. Oh, brother! I was probably going to get the riot act along with my walking papers. My jaw hit the ground, however, when they told me they were really impressed by my work, gave me a free pass to the entertainment that night and the rest of the evening off with pay. Oh, my goodness! I was so surprised and felt so good. I followed through on what I thought was right and got acknowledged for it. What a deal!

They may have been testing your diligence. I had a battalion commander once who, when we were on the DMZ mission, would try to bluster his way past the guard without showing proper ID. If the guard let him pass, both the guard and the Sergeant of the Guard got written up for disciplinary action.

Sounds about right. I might have been good in the military. I do think adhering to the rules is important.

@RubyHawk .........indeed, but, if a person's take on what is right is skewed then it screws up everything and everyone closeby.

At times, good leaders acknowledge and encourage folks who do their duty. So yes you got a good reward for your honest work.

I was gonna say - you DID do the right thing and didn't have to feel like a schmuck! That's so great they acknowledged you for what you did afterall. We always went to the county fair (I have yet to go to a state one) . . . I love all that carnival action too!

@celticeagle I love these big carnivals (not so much the smaller ones that come around the city . . . I don't feel safe ).

What you went through reminds me of a Gomer Pyle episode when he refused to a very important person to enter the military base since the VIP did not have proper identification. When Gomer was given a talk by his drill sergeant about what happened, Gomer was not punished since the VIP admitted that Gomer was right obeying the rules of the military base.
