Yesterday's medicine review.

So, yesterday I went for my medicine review at the Green Hill health centre. My appointment was for 1:45pm and we got there at 1:30pm. We were in the queue for the reception to sign ourselves in and the lady said, any appointments? and I raised my hand, and she gestured us off to the side. So, we went and sat on some seats in the waiting area to the right, but I said to my Mum, what did she mean? Did she mean sign in on the screen? (There's like a computer screen where you csn can sign in). My Mum thought that someone would just come out to us, but I said not if we haven't signed in because they don't know that we're here! So, eventually my Mum went to try and sign me in on the computer screen, but it wasn't working for her. So, eventually she went to talk to the receptionist and she said it probably wasn't working because we were late! (My Mum had tried to sign in on the computer screen after my allotted appointment time!) So, we were directed to one of the other waiting rooms, and my appointment had been adjusted to 1:55pm! But it wasn't long before a nurse came and called me in. I followed the nurse to a room, and she was about to shut the door, and I said, oh, my Mum's coming but she's a bit slow. She looked out of the door and said, no, she's not coming, she's not in the corridor. But then I peeked out and my Mum was just coming round the corner of the waiting room. She said she couldn't get up off the seat! The nurse took my blood out of my right arm, and it hurt a little bit. She covered it with cotton wool and a plaster. Then she said I should speak to the receptionist about having my blood pressure done. Before we went out of the room, my Mum apologised for us being late, and explained why. So we went out and told a guy on reception that I needed my blood pressure taking. There was a great big machine at the side of the reception area. There was an old man waiting to have his blood pressure taking aswell. He went first. The guy helping said his blood pressure was a bit high, and he'd need to have it taken again in 10 minutes. So, then it was my turn. I had to take my watch off. My Mum waited in the waiting area just infront of the machine. The machine measures your weight and height aswell as your blood pressure. I had to stand on this platform. Then the machine said, Please stand still and upright. Measuring weight. Measuring height. Beep beep beep beep beep. Could not measure height. We can not complete this reading! The guy from reception who was helping us said to get back off the platform. I got back on and the same thing happened. So, he said he thought he had something that might help, so I did it again, and this time he held a blank piece of paper over my head! After he did this it managed to measure my height. Then I was told to put my wrist through this hole where there was a band that would take my blood pressure. The machine said, Please insert wrist without watch into hole as directed in the picture. Please relax. Do not talk. So I did so. After a while the machine again said, Please relax. Do not talk. I was thinking, how can I relax when I've got this thing pinching my arm and I'm totally stressed!! When the process was finished, I took my arm out, and you had to collect a ticket from the machine with your results on. My blood pressure was 152 over something! So the guy from reception who was helping said I needed to have it done again, because it was a bit high. I said, well that's probably because I was stressed. He said just try to relax. I thought that's easier said than done! The old man had his done again after about 10 minutes, and he said as he stepped on the platform, it won't make any difference! When his result ticket came out of the machine the guy from reception made a kind of profanity! It was about 221 over something! So, the guy from reception thought that was not right, so he decided to reboot the machine. He said this would take about 15 minutes. While we were waiting for the machine to reboot, my Mum saw her friend Nan Nutt come in. She was told to take a seat for a minute, then she was directed to another waiting room. She didn't see us at this point, as we were sitting waiting at the other side of reception. Then my Mum decided to go out and explain to my step-dad, who was waiting for us outside, why it was taking so long, and she left me with the bags. When the machine was rebooted, the old man had another go. But the result was still high, to the guy from reception decided that it needed servicing and so he said we wouldn't be able to have our blood pressure done that day!. I went out to find my Mum and tell her, and gave her her bag. She had to go back into reception to ask for a blood pressure form, because she was doing hers at home, so we went back in, but first I went to the toilet because I was bursting. There were notices all over the toilets saying Drug users have been using these toilets inappropriately. Please do not touch anything suspicious. I went to the toilet and when I came out my Mum was there. I said, have you got your form? And she said, not yet. Then she said she wasn't going to be using that toilet because she'd never be able to get up off it! We found a disabled loo but it said, please collect key from reception, but Mum couldn't be bothered and said she'd last until she got home. Then we saw Lee, a friend from Church who we hadn't seen for ages, so we had a chat with him, then Nan Nutt came back out of her appointment and so then we were talking to her. Eventually Mum got her blood pressure form and we went out. Nan Nutt came out with us. She said her husband Bill was picking her up at 3:10pm. As we reached the car park and we were about to cross the car park to get to my step-dad's car, Bill turned up in his car so Nan didn't get chance to say hello to my step-dad! She just got in the car and went home. And then so did we! We had set off at 1:20pm, and we got home at about 3:15pm! When I got home I just washed up then got straight on with getting my dinner. Later last night I did my blood pressure again with my own blood pressure monitor and it wss 138/81 which is a lot better but still a bit high, so I'm going to try again tonight. As I was finishing my first try last night, I saw two little foxes play fighting on our lawn, which was nice.

It seems like a lot of work just to get a blood pressure reading. Seeing the foxes was really nice. Enjoy your day.

These things never go easily it seems. I get totally frustrated sometimes with all the carry-on. They don't seem very competent sometimes.

It sounds like a very trying time, but I am glad that you got it all sorted out. One of my doctors had a blood pressure monitor that just never seems to work.

@sharonelton What a palaver! Even going for a doctor’s appointment is a major technical effort now. I hope the machine measuring weight doesn’t broadcast the result out loud - so embarrassing. Blood pressure would be taken much more quickly by the nurse who was drawing blood rather than all this business with machines that need a 15 minute reboot. We’ve gotten too smart for our own good.

Yes, it was a bit of a palaver! I was expecting to go, have a blood test and be out in 5 minutes! No, the machine didn't broadcast the results out loud! There's a display on the machine that shows it, and then it's printed on the ticket that comes out afterwards. I know what you mean, that's the way it used to be done. Maybe they think doing it this way they'll be able to see more patients.
