I am listening to a video on YouTube about this guy named Serge. He was in Scientology and working lower degrading jobs. He had some family, just his mother, and a brother. His father had left the area and he had lost contact with him. He decided to leave the cult when he was about 15 years old. He got a job as an extra and was in "Clueless" and "Born on the 4th of July" among others. At one point he had made some homemade firecrackers and one exploded. He lost an eye and had both arms amputated. His mother did go to the hospital to visit him. She used the checks he had gotten from working as an extra to come to see him at the hospital. She helped him get on Social Security and found him a place to live. She visited him a couple of times and then just disappeared.
After living at that same place for six years he was evicted and became homeless. He slept in doorways on Hollywood Boulevard. Sometimes his money would blow away and he would go hungry for the remainder of the month. No one helped him. His prosthetics wore out and he had to make out without them.
He was homeless for ten years. He had some run-ins with the police and was even maced at one point.
He found out about the Aftermath Foundation from a woman working with the police department. She helped him get another glass eye and arm prosthetics. He had had no advocate to help him and he didn't know he could get these things until this woman helped him. He had been so traumatized by being homeless for ten years that he was non-verbal.
So slowly he was able to get his life back on track. A lot of this help came by way of The Aftermath Foundation. These people are all volunteers who are ex-Scientologists who help those who have decided to leave the cult.
They bought him an iPhone, got him dental care, got him a tutor and he was able to get his GED. He is 46 years old.
The Aftermath Foundation.org was set up for people who have decided to leave Scientology. When a person leaves they usually have nothing. The clothes on their backs are about it. The foundation helps them find a place to stay, find a job, navigate the system that they have no knowledge of, and help with anything else they may need.

That sounds like a great foundation. Ex Scientologists can have a rough time of it.
