The irony!

Some friends run a bakery. They specialise in gluten-free cakes but also do a dedicated vegan range. On their blog they talk about things to think about when considering becoming vegan, and the challenges and ‘hacks’ for vegan baking. They also have some ‘rescue’ animals – a pony, two donkeys, two cats and three dogs – who regularly feature on their website and in the blog. However, during Covid lockdown they naturally had a big downturn in sales, and since it happened so suddenly they had stocks of ingredients they couldn’t use. So they bought a few pigs, fed them with the leftover ingredients and then turned them into sausages. It was such a success that they have continued to keep a few every year since. The pigs are Oxford Sandy and Blacks, a rare old breed that is very friendly and attractively marked. Also too lively and fast-moving for a successful photo, as I discovered! Funnily enough I haven’t seen the pigs featuring in the blog! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

Maybe they saw the light and realised that we need meat protein, too.

@BarBaraPrz I hope so, this actual vegan mania is ridiculous.

No, they were never vegan themselves, but they do cater to a lot of vegan customers. And they keep quiet about the pigs, which they just eat themselves (and share with staff).

@Fleura Ah, got it. Surely they don't want that piece of info to be known to their customers then .

No, they were never vegan themselves, but they do cater to a lot of vegan customers. They just don't mention the pigs on any of their publicity materials.

Seems a tad hypocritical to me, but guess somebody has to bring home the bacon...pun intended...

I guess they have to cater to their vegan customers, but that doesn't mean they need to adhere to the same ethos.

@fleura I don’t know how to react to that. I could never send this little piggy off to market. People who lived down the lane from us in Malawi kept a few pigs and slaughtered one every now and then and it was all great excitement for us.

@Fleura No, just an accidental vegetarian who eats a bit of meat from time to time but not very much.

@Fleura Yes, but I don't name them! If I had animals, they would have names and they would be my pets!! I would never make it as a farmer! Enjoy your day.

This is one of those times where you don't want to know where sausages come from!

Seems like a great instance of recycling food waste to me!
