Just Use Some Common Sense!

I read this article online about online scamming. Some of the terminology was new to me. Like for instance the term 'smishing'. It is like phishing but done on a mobile phone. It is a texting attack done to gain personal information. What will they think of next? They are getting sneakier. You really have to use your common sense. More than 42 million Americans experienced identity theft with $52 billion in losses in 2021. There was a 38% increase in 2022. I think we need to be vigilant, change our passwords off and on and make sure they are strong ones. And use your common sense. If an email or text looks weird don't open it. I never open anything I am not sure of whether it is a text, email, or whatever. I have a low number of accounts online. I check all my money accounts daily for anything that looks odd. I had an email regarding a postal pickup the other day. It was so blatantly fake that I had to laugh. The return email address was the guy's name and not the post office of all things. So bizarre! So, don't be lazy and change your passwords often. Don't open weird emails or texts. Don't use public WiFi to shop or do banking. Never call bank numbers given in emails. Look up the local number for your bank and use it. Be sure all your devices are updated. If you don't have the latest updates your device could become vulnerable. Be sure the sites you use to shop on are encrypted. They should have a lock icon next to the URL and, be sure the URL starts with HTTPS and not HTTP. Be safe or be sorry.

The scammers and hackers are getting smarter every day; and we, unfortunately, must be constantly vigilant. Thanks for the tips and enjoy your day.

They usually include a link with texts for a person to log into their online banking so that they can have that information.

Lately there is a scam around here. People knocking on the door to say they are from the insurance company. They are checking out the hail damage and they ask people for the deductable! I hope no one fell for it. Obviously, they know many people have claims for hail damage right now. Grrrrrr, scammers
