I Have Had a Few Close Calls in My Seven Decades of Life

After reading @just4hims' post about her several close calls I thought I would write about mine. Once when I was a very small child, probably five or six my mother took me for a drive up in the mountains. I don't recall a lot of what happened but my mother was in a bad way emotionally. She was dealing with a lot. She felt that she didn't want to live in this world any longer and didn't want me to either. Her plan was to run off the lonely mountain road into the river. The car would fall into the water and we'd be gone. Luckily she decided against it just in time and with just some maneuvering and the sound of gravel moving in the road she kept the car from going over the edge into the water below. When I was in junior high I ran around with a gal whose mom was an alcoholic and her dad was out of the picture. I stayed at her house a lot on the weekends. Her boyfriend was a delinquent who had an attitude problem and took way too many chances. Once he had us in the car with him was racing along a hill road. He went around a curve way too fast and the car whirled in a complete circle. It moved so fast that a closed can in the seat near me opened. At the age of about 27ish, I was working as a cocktail waitress and had a boyfriend who would pick me up each night after work. This particular night he had decided to drive the ragtop Corvette Stingray he was working on. The breaks weren't very good and he really should not have been driving it on a public road. (It was a late 60's model for those that might be interested) Rain clouds broke and we got a good downpour. This made the road a bit slick and my boyfriend lost control of the car. The car left the road and ended up in a lot next to a power plant. I came to laying on the ground with a lady who must have been from the neighborhood standing over me telling me an ambulance was on the way. I looked around and saw my boyfriend setting in the driver's seat of the car a few feet away. He had a spinal cord injury, was in a coma for nine days, and then had a cardiac arrest and passed away. I had a bad concussion and had survivor's guilt for several years after that. Another time when I was about 45 and in the process of leaving my ex-husband I had a real close call. I was in our bedroom with my back facing the doorway trying to hurriedly pack a bag. My ex had been downstairs but I heard him walk up the stairs and stop in the doorway just behind me. I suddenly heard a weird loud clicking noise and turned to see what he was doing. He had a rifle pointed at me and had fired it. Luckily it had misfired. Whoa! Those were a little hard to write. Have you had any close calls?

I'm glad that you're still here with us! Sorry about your boyfriend. I've never had a close call. I was very ill for two weeks during the 60s pandemic. That's the worst of what I've had. I guess I've been lucky.

@celticeagle I think it was 1968 if I remember correctly. I remember my husband (my then boyfriend) calling to check on me; and I was so sick I didn't want to talk to him.

Apparently, and I say apparently because I have no memory of it, being a baby and all, I toddled off the stoop and had the wind knocked out of me. My mother gave me mouth-to-mouth to revive me.

Oh, my gosh! I'm so glad the rifle misfired. Did you bring him up on charges? I'm glad you survived the car accident. I'm sorry your boyfriend didn't. You had some tough situations. I'm glad you're alive too.

No, I just wanted out and not to have to go to court and see him again. He was such a creep when he drank.
