Hey, hey, it’s the first day of school here in the land of the horse race! (And yes, we have schools in Kentucky….they teach how to make moonshine stills in shop class.
) That means I have to be home by 2 PM or I’ll get stuck behind the rolling yellow traffic jams.
Enough of my problems, here’s another song that ended up on the Clear Channel memorandum, which listed songs that were advised against playing after 9/11.
I Feel the Earth Move - Carole King
Most people who are older have heard the story behind Neil Sedaka’s hit “Oh! Carol”: he and Carole King were schoolmates, and he wrote it about her. (She re-worked the lyrics into “Oh! Neil” in response.
) I bring that up because the opening line is, “Oh, Carol, I am but a fool.”
Yeah, it fits. I guess the line “I feel the sky tumbling down” was what the boneheads, ahem, execs at Clear Channel thought would be problematic. Other than that, this song about love (and maybe about sex, if your mind goes there….
) seems like it was just plucked out of the blue and stuck on the list.
There are albums that, for a lot of people, defined the 70s. Tapestry is definitely one of those albums, and one that I recommend if you’ve never listened to. You’ll feel the earth move, too.

If you’ve ever seen the movie Foul Play Stanley (so brilliantly played by Dudley Moore) understood exactly what the song was about.

@DWDavis — oh, it’s a hoot. Chevy Chase’s first movie after he left SNL. Burgess Meredith is also terrific in it!

@FourWalls I notice in her songs, she has unexpected chords/notes . . .those are some of the kinds of things musically that draw me into a song. Yes, a fabulous songwriter!!

As a “hit performer,” she basically had “Jazzman” and the Tapestry album. But, oh, the songs she wrote!!!!

Certainly always liked this song and at any nightclub in NYC when this song was played with about 100 people on the dance floor the earth really seemed to move

I’m surprised there was any room for anyone to move!

See. This isn’t that hard. Now, go lounge by the pool before your rolling yellow traffic jams start up.
