Good evening,
So, I just watched the movie called The Butler starring Forest Whitaker. The movie which is touted as based on a true story was released in 2013.
Makes me laugh when they say it is based on a true story. If there is even a little of the show that was true, they say that, but they change the whole story, I get it, it’s for entertainment value. I just would rather they not say it is based on a true story then.
Example being there was a man who served as a butler at the white house for 34 years, yes that is true. However, the man’s name was Eugene Allen not Cecil Gaines like in the movie. Eugene was born on a plantation in Virginia not in Georgia. What befalls Cecil’s family is made up for the movie and dramatic effect.
In the movie Cecil has two sons where Allen had one. Allen’s son was not a political activist as shown in the movie and never ran for political office.
Odd how all these “true stories or based on a true story” movies leave out so much of the truth. I guess people’s lives don’t have enough excitement to fill up 2 hours’ worth of time.
Overall, as for an entertaining movie, yes, I would say it is entertaining and worth a watch. Just don’t believe it all as a true story.
