Top ten time! There have been some good songs this month, but now we’re looking at my favorite songs that showed up on the infamous “Clear Channel Memorandum” after 9/11, listing over 130 songs that executives thought were inappropriate for airplay. Let’s get rolling. #10: Tuesday’s Gone - Lynyrd Skynyrd I can sort of understand this one. For those who don’t remember, September 11, 2001 was a Tuesday. But there’s that inconsistency to look at again: this was on the list. “Ruby Tuesday” by the Stones was on the list. “Tuesday Afternoon” by the Moody Blues was not. Anyway, if you want to know how Lynyrd Skynyrd got so popular in the days of FM rock without a big AM hit to fall back on, you can look at songs like this as an explanation. They called songs like this “bathroom break” songs. The DJ could put on a song like this (or the nine-minute “Free Bird” on side two) and go grab a snack, answer the phones, pull more records, or whatever else he/she wanted to do…as long as the record didn’t skip or get stuck.
