Funny Songs: Cover of the “Rolling Stone”

It’s hard to be “funny” this morning, as I ache so much for our dear myLotter NJ Chic, who lost her father yesterday. If you know her, stop by one of her discussions and offer a hug. That parent-shaped hole in one’s life is indescribable, as those of you who have it know. Hopefully this can provide a moment of lightheartedness, as I continue the list of songs that I personally found humorous. Cover of the “Rolling Stone” - Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show I told you Shel Silverstein would be back! Back when they issued a postage stamp in honor of Silverstein’s classic children’s book The Giving Tree I did a list of ten favorite songs that he wrote. This was sort of on the list. I say “sort of” because the version I used was the country rendition. Yes, Buck Owens reworked this song as “The Cover of the Music City News,” that being the big country publication of the day. This came out at a time when Rolling Stone was relevant. They haven’t really been relevant since the Eagles broke up in 1980, IMO. (Seriously: you go back and read the scathing reviews they wrote of albums that are on their “500 Greatest Albums” list, then read glowing, lift-your-feet-off-the-ground reviews of albums that weren’t even on the list, and you’ll see what I mean. Not to mention publisher Jann Wenner is in charge of keeping superstar bands like REO Speedwagon out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because he doesn’t like them. ) Enough of the rant. This is a tongue firmly in cheek look at rock stardom, where there’s groupies and limos and “all kind of pills.” The only problem is that, despite the fact that “we keep getting richer,” they’re NOT on the Rolling Stone cover. Of course, after this became a hit, they were put on the cover. Cover of the “Rolling Stone” Written by Shel Silverstein Recorded by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show From Sloppy Seconds, 1972 We got a genuine Indian guru:

This is a favorite of mine. I never realized Buck Owens did a version. I'll have to look it up.

From what she’s posted, it seems like her family is letting her grieve alone.

@FourWalls Yes. I told her we are there for her and to PM me any time. I doubt she ever would.

I didn’t know this one for years because I grew up listening to Buck Owens’ version.

Some people have way too much influence sometimes.

It concerns me with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that someone’s opinion is keeping worthy candidates out. People know who REO and Foreigner are…I don’t like Foreigner (walked out of a concert before they hit the stage), but they are famous, and it’s a hall of fame and not a hall of “Jann Wenner’s pets.”

Rolling Stone magazine has never been relevant in my life. Dr. Hook, hadn't heard them in a long time. I like this one.

My dear mother of blessed memory used to say of certain celebrities, “I’d like to buy him for what I think he’s worth and sell him for what he thinks he’s worth.” Ditto that mag.
