Disgusted by comments on Facebook

As many of your know I live at the famous Jersey Shore. There are several FB groups specifically for certain local beach towns and also for the larger area and county as a whole since it is a popular tourist destination. The ocean has been unusually rough for the past week. Many beaches had red flags indicating no swimming was allowed. There have been several drownings, a couple of people still missing, many rescues, and I've written about my father's accident. (he didn't drown) People post about the rescues or the incidents as they are happening and so many people feel entitled to leave nasty comments about how stupid the swimmers were for even being in the water or swimming without a lifeguard. I'm not saying that swimming without a lifeguard is a good decision but like those comments aren't helpful after the fact. Sure make your own post expressing frustration but there's no need to say that someone dying is "survival of the fittest" or calling the person stupid. Family members can read those remarks and they just aren't necessary. What happened to my father couldn't have been prevented if a lifeguard was on duty in the chair or even if they were standing directly next to him in the ocean. Sometimes freak accidents happen. Would it have happened if my dad wasn't in the water? No. But other than that there was no way to prevent it.

That's the thing about accidents - it will still happen, we can prepare for its eventualities, but we definitely cannot stop it nor accurately predict it. The thing about Facebook is that it paved the way for keyboard warriors, people who like to be know-it-all's and critical about anything and anyone since they have the cover of social media. I'll bet they couldn't say what they post out loud in person. So sorry that you have to deal with this, take a break from it for a while.

I agree with you that making mean comments of persons who die in accidents like you mention do not know the saying from the He Man cartoons in the 1980s which is "A joke is funny until you are the victim then it is hilarious."

I agree. Nasty comments don't help anyone and are totally unnecessary.

Kindness, manners and decency don't get much media play - scandal, rudeness, shock value - these grab headlines - perhaps these people feel it will get them the attention they so desperately crave?
