Funny Songs: King Tut

So far this month’s look at funny songs (well, songs I thought were funny) has been all over the map. There have been songs from the 20s, hits from the 50s that nobody (except me) remembers, country, and rock. But finally, today, one that “everybody” knows.
King Tut - Steve Martin and the Toot Uncommons
I’m offended any time someone says “serious” around me, and I certainly wouldn’t want to offend one of the great comedians of our era by using that unpleasant term about him. Except for one thing: he is a seriously good musician. I don’t know if you’ve followed his music career, but he has made some outstanding music (listen to the work he’s done with Edie Brickell). And, at 78, he’s a bright young bluegrass musician.
(Remember, we lost two 90-plus-year-old bluegrass musicians earlier this year.)
Of course, he’s not always serious with his lyrics. He did a great tune with the Steep Canyon Rangers called “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs.” There was “Grandmother’s Song” from his first stand-up album (“Be oblong and have your knees removed”).
And there’s this. Written in response to the exhibit of King Tut artifacts that toured America, it turned into his biggest hit, making the Billboard top 20.
And how old am I? I’m “I saw Steve Martin in concert as a stand-up comedian” years old!

Alway could count on that sketch when Steve hosted SNL.

I love Steve Martin
! VERY talented - more than just a funny guy. Gosh I haven't seen this video in eons . . . that was a pretty elaborate set for SNL! I watched him on Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee . . . saw more of his serious side, but I respect him completely - still a fan

@much2say — I have frequently quoted the “you put Edwina back in the bowl” line when my ball lips out of a hole while playing I Putt Putt. Lily Tomlin co-starred in it.

I love his music and comedy, and he’s a fine actor. I thought All of Me was a good comedy!

@FourWalls That was pretty cool. I love a good saxophone solo. Goes back to dating a saxophone player in high school.

Definitely a funny song performed with that sarcastic wit of his I like so much. I remember using this tune in my own songs with a funny title series. Nice pick

Thank you kindly! Can’t go wrong with a guy who had a song with a line that said “be oblong and have your knees removed.”

He probably didn’t go over well in the land of Morecambe and Wise.

He has me as well. I didn’t know it until he became popular in the late 70s that he wrote for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, as well as Glen Campbell and Sonny & Cher’s shows.

I don't think I ever really understood this song and its humor. My two favorite Steve Martin movies are Father of the Bride one and two,
