Calculators are good but not when we do not have them around. The other day someone dropped in - a guy who will be catering for the party I am hosting He looked for the calculator and could not find it. He had to do a calculation - 7x12. He looked at me and obviously he was not able to do a mental calculation. I helped him out. Silly I say. Even for simple arithmetics he was wanting to use his calculator. How good are you without a calculator? How long did you take to know the answer 7x12?

Oh my word. That didn’t take me even a second. We memorized our “times tables” as children, and they never left my memory.

for two-digit multiplication I can still finish it in less than 30 seconds, except there are infinitely many fractions so I have to scribble them on a piece of paper.

If you are good with your tables it should not take you more than 5 seconds.

I’m curious as to his age. When I was in elementary school we had to memorize our times table. I suppose one could be a bit rusty, but that is a simple one.

He just did not try - yes he is not very old and youngsters will go for the calculator even if they have to add one plus one (lol)

I don't need a calculator unless it's a huge complex calculation. I can be faster than calculator for such simple calculations

I knew that math fact instantly. Did he not have a calculator on his phone? I do, but I would not bother with it for something that simple.

We rely on calculator somehow, but I'm surprised the guy could not do such a simple arithmetic.
