A House Divided Movie Review(2000)

I watched this movie the other night and really enjoyed it. It is the story of a young woman who is part Negroid(Black American) in a time soon after the Civil War. She(Amanda American Dixon) is played by Jennifer Beale. She comes back to the plantation after her father's death. After the funeral, the will is read and she has left the plantation and all his other holdings. The older brother doesn't agree and takes her to court. During that time it must have been horrible for the Blacks. They were given rights and for the first time could own land. The opposing lawyer was such that he could not perceive the notion of the jurors giving her any rights. The backstory really grabbed at my heartstrings as well. Amanda has been raised to be the perfect Southern Belle by her father and grandmother. She doesn't know that her real mother was a black slave. The story shows the bigotry hatred and racist world as it was back then. I can only imagine what it must have been like back then.
