Boiled Peanuts

Eating boiled peanuts with family has its own charm. We did it the last time - though years ago - we visited our native place. My brother lived there with her children and mother was there too But today both my mother and brother are no more. Most of the children have left the place and just my niece who is married lives with her family.
That memory comes alive each time I eat boiled peanuts and I miss them so.
What brings back your old memories?

Curry, eating Mama's recipe for curry that I make.
And also grapes, fresh green and purple grapes we would pick off the vines in your yard.
I could name more food, but mostly their presence stays with me..24 hours a day.
I am glad you have the good memories and associations.

I too remember my mother's curries as no matter how advance we are in learning new things nothing like what we ate when we were kids.

@allknowing I know, somehow we cannot duplicate their cooking and the old days.

Whenever I make chicken and noodles, or dumplings, or any kind of pie, I think of my maternal grandmother. She was the down-home, old fashion cook and she could really put a great dinner on the table. I like to think I can come close to what she could do, but she's been gone a long, long time now...my paternal grandmother was an excellent cook, yet she cooked a lot differently than my other grandmother. She made delicious roast beef, her asparagus with Hollandaise was to die for, as was her loaves of Irish Bread. She also made stewed potatoes--I have come very close to copying them, but it was all hit and miss with no recipe to follow.

Over years I have picked so many recipes from so many sources but I can never forget what my mother prepared. My daily diet will have her recipes and only on occasions will I cook what I have picked up such as the Chinese Fired rice, sout, etc.

My mother was not a good cook. My grandmothers both played a large part in my cooking skills. I am very thankful for them taking the time to teach me.

My grandmother's cooking (both of them) brings back special memories!! I sure wish I had some of their recipes. My father's mother made the best German Chocolate Cake and my mother's mother made awesome biscuits, chicken and dumplings and several other different cakes! My mother never got into cooking

@allknowing Does it have a caramel topping with coconut and chopped nuts? I don't remember what the Black Forest cake has on top. I think too, the chocolate is different. Black Forest is a dark chocolate and German Chocolate is more like a milk chocolate.

Could that cake be black forest cake? I have tasted the original when I was visiting Germany a few years ago

My mother's cooking brings back old memories. She was a very good cook. I regret I never learned from her.

I learnt on my own as she never let us get into the kitchen while she was cooking. We only had to do chores for her (lol)
