Daniel Day-Lewis, the British acting legend, has the distinctive title of the only male actor to have received three Best Actor Oscars. He has actually only received six nominations. He received nominations for My Left Foot(1989) and won it, Name of the Father (1999), Gangs of New York (2002), There Will Be Blood(2007) and won it, Lincoln (2012) and won it, and Phantom Thread (2017). He took a retirement from 1997 to 2000 when he took up the profession of an apprentice shoemaker in Italy. He again announced his retirement in 2017. One of my all-time favorite movies was Gangs of New York.
