Modern technology is not making this any easier

I wanted to invite a couple of friends and their families round tomorrow evening to make the most of this ‘last gasp of summer’ that we are currently enjoying. I texted one to ask if she was free and she replied within a few hours to say she would love to come. I texted the other one and haven’t heard anything back. I tried calling as well – eventually got the answering service. I tried WhatsApp in case the phone signal wasn’t good wherever she is. She often goes out and leaves her phone at home so I sent an email – and I also emailed her husband in the hope he might pass on the message. So far, absolutely no response. I think I will have to resort to going round there with pen and paper in the old-fashioned way. All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2023.

We just can send a message but response is not fixed. It's better to meet and invite. Here technology has failed. That's the reason we Indians still use invitation cards for marriage ceremony and invite people personally.

That's so true. We can send a message but there's no guarantee that it actually gets there.

@Fleura The person has to see the message to respond.

I still live like in the old times. I invite people with a few days in advance by calling them on the phone. Letters took too much to be answered (except for wedding invitations that had to be sent 2 months ahead at least). I haven´t got used to cellphones, emails or messaging. My eldest daughter hates me for that. Take it or leave, I reply.

I would normally arrange things further in advance but I only just decided to do this! Must be more organised in future.

@fleura Do you remember the thrill of sending and receiving handwritten letters. I loved fountain pens, ink and blotting paper. I never had much to say in letters but I didn’t half like composing them.

I still use a fountain pen on a daily basis and I do manage to send the odd letter every now and then, or at least a card. I hope people enjoy receiving them.

These days, I can’t imagine making myself so hard to reach. Emergencies happen way too often to be unreachable so often. I don’t mean to never let go of the phone though. It is a good idea to unplug every now and then.

We get so used to instant replies/responses that it comes as a bit of a shock when technology lets us down.
