The right tool makes all the difference

Having the right tool for a job makes a world of difference. Whether it’s in the garage, the garden, the kitchen or wherever, if you’ve ever tried to undo a nut without the right size spanner (wrench), pour preserves into bottles without a funnel, prepare a seed bed without a rake… any job is transformed from frustrating cursing to a simple movement with the right tool. Today my day has been made joyful and easy by the purchase of a large stapler (from Ebay of course). It cost less than £5, most of that for postage. It’s a chunky thing, the sort you probably remember seeing in the school office. Apparently it can staple up to 110 pages if required (it has a handy little plate on it that shows you what it can do with the different sizes of staples you can buy for it). Today though I’m using it for my current craft project, which I expect I will tell you about in due course. I would love to show you but I assume the picture issue still isn’t sorted – at least I can’t see any. What’s your favourite tool today? All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2023.

That's absolutely right. In art, you have to have the right brushes, paper and things. I'm watching Bob Ross The Joy of Painting at the moment, and he uses these painting knives with the blade on the side that he uses for straight lines in trees and for doing shadows and highlights on mountains. I have some metal ones in my saved for laters on Amazon, but I managed to find a plastic one in a pack with some others in the sale in the Works for 50p! It'll serve it's purpose until I can get the metal ones!

I think we have a pack of those little palette knives as well. How's the art going? I would say 'show us some more of your pictures' but of course you can't at the moment!

@Fleura That's great. The Autumn/Winter art class is going on at the moment, but seeing as I'm not going this time, I'm trying to do something similar at home. (We were given the prospectus for the Autumn/Winter classes when we were there in the summer, so I know what they sre supposed to be doing.) First I did a drawing of my hand in pencil, which came out better than I was expecting because I'm no good at hands, next was a deserted mansion in biro, but I used a fine liner, next was a spooky or autumnal scene in fine liner, and I did a pumpkin and other vegetables by an overturned basket. Last week I did figs in oil pastels and this week it's a Partridge in a Pear tree in oil pastels, except I couldn't get a picture of a Partridge in a Pear tree off the copyright free pictures site, so I got a picture of a Partridge on a fence in front of a tree which may or may not be a Pear tree to copy from!

@sharonelton Surely you could find a Christmas card with a partridge in a pear tree! You are doing well keeping up with the work.

You asked me my favorite tool, and a certain man popped up in my head.

I've worked in the print business and used a foot-powered stapler for booklets. It was an antique cast-iron thing and one time I managed to get my thumb in the way when I trounced on the foot pedal. I ran up and down the shop a few times, saying the F word before thinking to run my thumb under the cold water...

@Fleura I did that too but my mother thought there might be some of the needle stuck in my thumb and had my father take us to the hospital to have it xrayed. I miss my treadle machine...

Never heard of a foot-operated stapler before! When I was about ten I accidentally stitched into my thumbnail with my Mum's treadle-powered sewing machine. She was furious because I broke the needle!

I don't normally shop online if I can buy things in person, but I do like finding a bargain on Ebay! And anyway I am a great believer in buying second-hand items - you may have noticed!

Useful isn't it? I should have got one ages ago, but new ones are very expensive. I didn't think of looking for a second-hand one until now, for some reason!

So true, without the right tool we can do nothing. I have two staplers, one is a small thing to stable only a few pages together, the bigger one up to 50. My favorite tool today my rake, the leaves are falling and I rake every day to keep the lawn clean.
