When I announced this adventure in bad grammar I’m sure this is one of the first songs that popped into your mind. Since I always do the first portion alphabetically you didn’t have to wait long…just for me to get through the other songs that start with “ain’t.”
Sing along!!
Ain’t That a Shame - Fats Domino
Of course! We can’t make it through a countdown like this without this oft-covered rock classic!
Here’s an interesting tidbit from Picky Wedia: reportedly, when Elvis met Fats Domino, he called Fats “the real king of rock and roll.” Rightfully so, too: among the songs debated and disputed by music historians to be “the first rock and roll record” is Domino’s 1949 hit “The Fat Man.”
Fats (real name: Antonio…Creole, not Italian) had a pretty important co-writer, too: Dave Bartholomew, who, among other things, gave us “I Hear You Knockin’” and “My Ding-a-Ling.” Together they wrote a number of great classics, including this one and “I’m Walkin’.”
And there’s a version for just about any taste: Hank Williams Jr. covered it. There’s the famous Cheap Trick rendition (that takes 20 minutes to end with all those solos
). There’s even a hapless, hopeless white-bread version by Pat Boone.
The only thing they don’t have is a grammatically correct rendition (“Isn’t That a Shame”).
Truthfully, that’s no shame at all.
Ain’t That a Shame
Written by Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew
Recorded by Fats Domino
Released as a single, 1955

When a song is nearly 70 years old and people are still enjoying it, you know it’s special!

Fats set the bar very high. Of course, he wrote it so it stands to reason that he’d know how to do the song.

If there’s a “Mount Rushmore of early rock songs,” this one is on it.
