Another update on the washing machine!

Today's the day the washing machine came! BUT.... So, I got up at 10:00am, like I usually do on a Saturday. Mum was hoping the washing machine would come early, to get it over and done with..but no such luck! I went into the living room and had my tablets. I started my breakfast, which was porridge, ten minutes later. Then it's finished twenty minutes later, so I have my breakfast half an hour after I've had my tablets. After I'd eaten my breakfast I went to the toilet, and as I was going past the bottom of the stairs I heard my step-dad moaning about when the washing machine should be coming. It went something like, do they want us to phone them, or are they going to phone us? and when are we going to get this (expletive) washing machine!? I went to the toilet, and when I came out I heard my step-dad was on the phone trying to find out where the washing machine was. When God was giving out fruits of the spirit, patience was not one my step-dad was given! I went back into the living room, and a little while later my step-dad came in saying the washing machine was due to arrive between 12:00 midday and 1:00pm. Mum said, Oh, great! Just when I should be getting the lunch! Throughout the morning my step-dad kept getting emails updating on when the washing machine was due to arrive. First it was 11:30am -12:00 then it was 11:35am - 12:15pm! Then it was 12:15pm - 1:15pm! Eventually they came at 12:45pm! The person who came to look at the washing machine when it broke down said the people who'd deliver the new one would disconnect the old one and then connect the new one. But my step-dad was told these people wouldn't do that. I think they expected us to disconnect the old one. But my Mum and step-dad are pensioners and I can't move the washing machine to get behind it to disconnect it. I think my step-dad pointed this out to them, and they eventually relented and said they'd do it. An Asian fella knocked on the front door and I opened it. Washing machine delivery he said. My Mum told him to go round to the side door, so he did and we let him in that way. We showed him where the old washing machine and tumble dryer are. He took the tumble dryer off the top of the washing machine (where they are is such a small space, the tumble dryer has to be put up on top of the washing machine.) And he looked behind the washing machine. I went back and sat in the living room out of the way reading, and a little later the guy came in and asked where the main stopcock for the water was. So they showed him. He ran the kitchen tap while he tried to turn the stopcock off, but he couldn't do it. He asked if that was the main stopcock and they said yes, but he said, it's not working, I can't turn it off. He said, I'd have to turn the mains off otherwise there'd be much too much mess when he disconnected the washing machine. So he said he couldn't do it. He said we'd have to phone an independent local plumber to come and do it! He said he's not really authorised to do it anyway, he's not supposed to touch people's possessions. He's just a delivery driver. So he said would we like him to take the new washing machine away and rebook the delivery when we've sorted out disconnecting the old one, and Mum said, no! Don't do that. You can put it in the garage. So now we've got a new washing machine, but it's in the garage waiting for when we can get the old one disconnected! My Mum was tired and said she wasn't going to phone for a plumber till Monday. But then my step-dad said he'd phoned for a plumber and he's coming on Wednesday afternoon - when we should be going to the shop! So now we'll be going to the shop on Thursday afternoon instead after my Mum and step-dad have come back from the luncheon club - when I'm supposed to be doing some painting! But I guess I can do some while they're at the luncheon club, then leave it while we go to the shop, then if it's not finished I can do some more to it at night after dinner. That also means I won't be able to do any laundry again on Monday! Anyway, what have you lot been getting up to? I hope you are all well and enjoying your weekend (unlike us!) Have a nice day.

If it is anything like the US, the workers can get in trouble from their employer for doing things they aren't supposed to do. If he turned off your water and there is a breakage, if the handle came off (it does happen) etc. his company would be liable for any damages. It's a pain, but that's how it is here. Also, if the water shut off has not been turned off and on for years, chances are the turnoff itself may need to be replaced. Sometimes, when not used they sort of freeze up and that's it.

Yes, that's probably what it's like in the UK too. Sounds like it, yes. But it was turned off not that long ago when we had our boiler serviced! It should work. And also I think we had to have something done with the upstairs toilet too. Yes, we ended up having a new ballcock because the toilet wasn't flushing properly. The main water supply had to be turned off then too. So, yes, it has been turned on and off fairly recently, so I don't know why it's not working now.

@MarieCoyle Yes, I'm glad about that. He should be able to figure it out. Let's hope so. Thank you very much.

@sharonelton Well, it's good that you have a plumber coming, then. He can figure it out, that's his job, and if he is a plumber he knows how and hopefully can get the parts quickly to fix the problem.

Hmm...that was a day busy with washing machine delivery. Glad that it's delivered and hopefully it will be functional soon when the plumber comes on Wednesday. What are you going to do with the laundry till then? My weekend is also not going too great as I am feeling a bit under weather with sore throat and body pain.

Yes, it was a very busy, and stressful, day! I'm glad the washing machine has been delivered, but I wish it was connected already! I hope the plummer has a better job of disconnecting the old and connecting the new when he comes on Wednesday. The laundry is just going to have to wait. It's not like we haven't got any clean clothes to wear so we'll be fine. I'm sorry your weekend isn't going great either, and I hope you are feeling better soon.

@sharonelton Hope that all goes well on Wednesday and you have your washing machine connected and running. I am still not completely well. Went to work but felt exhausted and low on energy. I hope to feel better tomorrow. This is annoying.

@arunima25 I hope so too. I don't think I can go without a washing machine for much longer! I'm sorry you're still not completely well. I hope you are feeling better soon. I know it can be annoying when you're not feeling well.

@RebeccasFarm He wasn't being payed anything. My step-dad payed the company direct with money off from the insurance. I wish you could come round and fix it! But there must be something wrong with it because I'm sure he would have been able to do it. He managed to lift the tumble dryer all on his own as I said.

I don't know what is going on! He was a big strong man (he moved the tumble dryer all on his own) so why couldn't he turn the stopcock off? Why don't you come round and have a go? Thank you very much, that is very kind of you. You're right, it is nonsense.

Yes, me too, to both statements! What are we going to do if, when the plummer comes on Wednesday, he can't turn the stopcock off either? I don't want to have to traipse to the laundrette every week!

Yes, we are, aren't we? I've never known it be so hard just to get a washing machine installed! I hope you enjoy your work. I hope you are well. Have a nice day.

You have a real flair for appliance drama! It all sounds like a major inconvenience, as I’m sure it is. I’m sitting here watching my dog’s hair stand up on the back of her neck. Someone just knocked on the door, and now she looks like she has a Mohawk. We have the game show, 25 Words or Less on in the background.

Thank you very much, I'll take that as a compliment! Yes, it is rather an inconvenience. This will be two weeks I haven't been able to do any laundry, and three weeks for the whites and woolies as I only managed one load the day the washing machine broke! That poor dog sounds like he/she has had major trauma! I've never heard of that game show. I don't think we have it in the UK.

@sharonelton Nothing is ever straightforward, not even turning off the water. We’ve just been for a forest walk and thoroughly enjoyed it.

No, you're right. I don't know why he couldn't do it. Last time we had someone come out they managed to turn the stopcock off! I'm glad you enjoyed your forest walk. It sounds really pleasant.
