We Were Soldiers was released March 1, 2002, by Paramount Pictures. The movie is based on a true story of the battle of Ia Drang, Vietnam on November 14, 1965. The film was based on the book, We Were Soldiers Once…and Young, written by Lieutenant General (Ret.) Hal Moore and reporter Joseph L. Galloway. Both men lived, fought, and survived the battle. If you are interested in war movies or the Vietnam conflict this is a must-see movie. Of course, it is rated R for violence, depiction of war, and language. It is worth the 138 minutes the movie lasts. As I always ask about a movie that claims to be based on a true story, how true is it. From what I could find out about the battle it seems this movie is close to the truth. There is a feeling in the movie that the Americans fought the battle, and that the leader of the Vietnam troops left the area after. The movie never claims that but that is the feeling you get, that however was not the case as the Vietnam leader shifts and attacks another unit the in the following days. There is a little difference in the timeline the movie shows compared to the real-life story, though it doesn’t seem to make a big difference in the movie. Overall, the movie seems to stick to the actual story. So much so that after Lieutenant General Hal Moore seen the movie he was quoted as saying it is 60 to 70% correct and Joseph Galloway said it was about 80% correct. I certainly would suggest this movie to anyone who is interested in war movies.

I stay away from war movies. I find them upsetting. I would suggest this to my husband who is a big fan of war movies, especially the ones based on true incidents.

certainly, a good movie in my opinion. If war movies are not your thing, I guess this one would not be for you.

@Bensen32 I like a good movie and have seen few really good ones with violence too. I might watch it with him..I get upset and knowing that it's based on true incidents makes me more disturbed.
