The top ten starts tomorrow; and, as I said, seven of those songs are rock tunes. So if you can tolerate one more country song, you will have survived! The regular (alphabetized) part of this look at “ain’t” songs ends today with another country legend. You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man) - Loretta Lynn Linda? HECK no! Like Porter, I got to watch a lot of Loretta when I was a young’n. As I mentioned yesterday, Porter’s show came on after the baseball game of the week. Then the Wilburn Brothers’ show followed. Just like Wagoner had a “girl singer” in Dolly Parton, the Wilburns had a “girl singer” too: Loretta Lynn. This is a true story! Someone told Loretta Lynn that she was worried about another woman trying to make a move on her husband. Loretta replied, “Honey, she ain’t woman enough to take him.” And from that, a song was born. Loretta did a lot for women’s lib, despite being married young and the spouse of a cheating, drinking man. LISTEN to some of her songs. She’d call Dooley (her husband) out when he needed it (“Your Squ*w is on the Warpath”, “Don’t Come Home a-Drinkin’ [With Lovin’ on Your Mind]”), and she’d stand up for women when she needed to (“Rated ‘X’,” “The Pill”). Thanks to the movie (and the song) Coal Miner’s Daughter people who have no knowledge of country music at least know her name. What a legend. You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man) Written by Loretta Lynn Recorded by Loretta Lynn From You Ain’t Woman Enough, 1966 Women like you, they’re a dime a dozen:

Oh, that’s nothing new. I don’t know how many videos have the wrong title. If you have the CD in front of you to rip, then you should be able to spell the artist’s name right (not “Dire Straights” or “Lead Zepplin” or “Lynard Skynard” ) AND get the song title correct! Anyway, you’re right, Loretta was a true legend!

Now, now ladies, no reason to fight over me. I make bad jokes. My sister who is not a big country music lover loves A Coal Miner’s Daughter. She must have seen it 15 times and if she sees it flipping channels, she will just stop right there and watch it again.

@FourWalls I have to agree from what I have seen probably the three biggest country legends along with Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard but last two kind of outcasts that people just learned to love.

Yeah, but like she said, women like these, they’re a dime a dozen! Loretta was in a class by herself. I don’t think anyone would accuse her of anything BUT country music (even if Jack White produced one of her albums or Elvis Costello covered one of her songs), but she was an American icon. I think the only two we have left like that are Dolly and Willie.

Indeed she did. I think that’s why she was so revered by people who don’t even like country music. She was down-to-earth and honest, and everyone could see that!
