The usefulness of self-awareness. The mirror of our mind

Various experiences, and things that we do, see, and think, can help us to build a greater self-awareness in ourselves. Some New Age teachings claim that each one of us is a mirror to each other person. The people that we bump into are our mirrors, this idea will tell us. When we think of someone as being an angry person, we are seeing something that is within us too. Their anger is showing us a reflection of the anger within ourselves. Most of us are often pretty unaware of our own faults. And so, life, or our soul, or even God, arranges for us to notice our own faults in someone else. This then gives us the chance to do a double take, and to see that we also possess these faults too. This gives us a chance to try to overcome them, as recognition is the first step towards correction. Is this idea of others mirroring who we are back to ourselves useful for us to keep in mind, or not, then? At the heart of yourself is always yourself, and any mirror is secondary to this self, and when you see qualities, or non-qualities in others, it never mirrors your real self back to yourself, for your real self is love, and all this does is to indicate certain traits that your mind can live from, or take on, at times, and at any one time, all of these are in the makeup of your mind, and so seeing traits in others just alerts you to not fall into these states of mind yourself. Nobody is just the mind state that they are portraying right now. We are all deeper persons than what our shallowness of mind might be currently displaying, or living from. "Life is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it." Ernest Holmes, (1887 to 1960 )an American Philosopher said this. "There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle, or the mirror that reflects it." Edith Wharton, (1862 to 1937), an American writer said this. Both of these quotes are right, in that our thoughts will come back to us, in some way, or another, but we are also more than our being just our thoughts. Our own thoughts also reflect in a lot of ways, the inner self that we are. If we are a bad egg, with a bad cold heart, our thoughts will be bad thoughts too. If, we are a good person, with a good heart, we will think good thoughts then too. Sometimes, it is hard to see into our own heart, without our seeing it from a mirror. So, when we see a fault in someone else, we should ask ourselves, are we stepping into that fault sometimes in our own lives too? Great post and exactly what I need to hear, problem is people ruin it with their bias, so I am like who is the bad guy and what am I trying to learn?

Well, if we see somebody being brutal, mean, nasty, full of anger, and pride, we can tell ourselves that we will try to be never like that ourselves. Every person/situation can teach us something if we allow them/it to do so

The bad guys never learn and continue to be bad. Sad but true.

I have seen some bad guys mellow with age, as age does bring its own lessons over time, and so even bad guys can improve sometimes.

Some teach us how not to be like them in the way they think, speak, and act. Thoughtless words and actions refuse to go away and that tells us, we should not follow such an approach when dealing with others. I give a quick once-over before I speak and immediately thereafter so that all is well It requires practice not to hurt others.

Yes, when we are good observers of life, and what is happening around us, we can learn a lot from that in the living better of our own life too. We should strive not to hurt others, but if we do, we should apologise, and try to mend past situations so that they do not fester on and get worse. Over time, we can improve, and grow wiser in our interpersonal relationships, with others too.

Thanks. Yes, every life can be an example to others, and we can look at it, and learn something from it, to aid us in the living of our own life too. We are all connected in life, and in our living of it too.
