The term "Indian" came from Christopher Columbus who thought he landed in the East Indies.
In 1990 Congress passed the Native American Language Act, which provides support for Native American language preservation and revitalization. This support is critical because all but two Native American languages are in danger of disappearing altogether by 2050.
Many words and state names come from Native languages such as pecan, skunk, Utah, Kentucky, and Connecticut.
Pocahontas and John Rolfe were the first recorded interracial marriage in US history. It actually helped to ease the tension between the Powhatan tribe and the British.
Native American 'Code Talkers' during WW I and WWII helped to provide hidden messages back and forth using their native language without being interrupted or interpreted by the enemy.
Native American tribes have tribunal sovereignty which means they are able to self-govern within their tribes.

There's also the Menominee and Oneida. Both of which are in Wisconsin. I need to do some research. I'm either from the Oneida or the Iroquois. I have the information somewhere. I know my grandmother a few generations back was 100% Native American.
It's good Congress passed the Language Act so the Native languages don't die out.

There are many tribes missing from that list...one being Blackfoot.
I have often had a particular interest in Native Americans and all about them. I find them fascinating.
