Hotel Rwanda was released in 2004 and starred Don Cheadle and Sophie Okoedo as Paul Rusesabagina and his wife Tatiana. Based on the Rwandan genocide, which occurred during the spring of 1994, the film documents Rusesabagina's efforts to save the lives of his family and more than 1,000 other refugees by providing them with shelter in the besieged Hôtel des Mille Collines.
The story is based on the real-life story but of course for movie’s sake we kind of skip from the beginning of the genocide to the near end of it in the 2-hour film. It is rated PG-13 due to the subject line, violence, and language. The film is more focused on the story of the ordinary man who rises to help others at the risk of himself and his family in the most frightening circumstances.
Overall, the movie was entertaining and well worth watching it. I really didn’t notice too many mistakes in the movie and as for the story I guess it’s who you believe, on how accurate it is. I would say if you watch this film, take a little time to read the story about this man. What happened to him after the time the movie takes place. That is just as interesting as the movie is.
The film made me think once again, how can people hate so deeply based just on race, ethnicity, religion, ect. I just don’t understand. If you don’t associate with them or not friends with them maybe that is one thing but to hate them as a whole, so much that you want to wipe them off the face of the earth. I will never understand that.
