Do you wanna know what’s up for next month? Yep.
But we have to get through the gonnas before hitting the wannas. For you who don’t care for country music (Linda? Heck NO!!!!!!!!!!), this is the last country song this month. At least it’s by a certified legend.
#3: Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes - George Jones
My dad would hear this song and say, “No one.” And my dad was absolutely correct. Everyone referenced in this song (very few names actually called, but you know who everyone is) was, is, and ever shall be singularly unique. That’s one of the reasons I fell out of favor with commercial music in the 80s (or, more precisely, it fell out of favor with me): all those 80s hair bands (man, you can smell the Aqua-Net just by the MENTION of that!
) looked alike, dressed alike, and even had logos that looked alike.
Since this is a country song, I’m not giving those 90s “hat boys” a pass. They all wore hats and jeans that looked like their were cutting off circulation to the legs and doing serious damage to the ability to procreate.
But when George Jones mentioned “Marty, Hank, and Lefty,” he didn’t need to put a last name. There are five people named “Hank” inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame, but when someone says Hank in the context of country music you KNOW who they mean. (Yep, Hank Penny.
)
To add to the history, co-writer Troy Seals is the brother of “England Dan” Seals and Jim Seals of Seals & Crofts. So he’s got a pretty good sense of music history as well.
One of the Possum’s best songs.

Written by Max D. Barnes and Troy Seals
Recorded by George Jones
From Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes, 1985
