Short story: We can only know ourselves from our knowing God

The old guru always had a smile on his dial, and nothing ever seemed to upset him

The spiritual guru, Sri Anton Fresklev, was telling his audience that life is about us finding out who we really are. Someone up the back of the room, yelled out to Anton. “Now that is just selfish garbage. We are not to spend too much time on ourselves, but to live our lives for others, in service of God.” “Who we are depends on God being in us, helping us to be who we are, and has nothing to do with what we might find, when we waste our time in trying to find out on our own.” The old guru winked at us all, in his audience, and replied. “Yes, we can never divert the river of life through ourselves, and rename the river a new me. We cannot push the river into ourselves. The river of life carries us all along in itself. We can recognise ourselves in the river, as a part of that river flowing, only because of God’s love.” “Finding out who we really are, depends on us remaining in that river, and keeping our connection to God, as we do so.” “We find ourselves within God, and so discover our purpose for living.” “I agree with what you have said, and I have no fights with it at all.” “We are our best selves, when we humbly allow God to live within us.” “We might be able to accomplish a little bit on our own, but with God in our lives, we can always accomplish so much more.” “’You've gotta stay true to yourself, stay who you are.”’ "Manny Machado, a Dominican athlete, said this." “No, I say.” “We must not stay who we are, but we must all become greater than who we are by attaching ourselves to God, who then makes of us all we can be. We then become greater than who we are, by not staying who we are.” Photo Credit: The photo used in this article was sourced from the free media site, pixabay.com The old guru always had a smile on his dial, and nothing ever seemed to upset him.

Yes if only...I can't suppress the feelings I have for others who are determined to be hateful.

It is very hard to do, but we should try to not allow ourselves to be overcome by the actions of others around us. We should try to live our lives as ourselves, and not as a painted figure, painted by others around us. If we react too much with our feelings, over time, we might become someone who we really are not, and become volatile people, overreacting to others at the drop of a hat.

@RebeccasFarm I do not think that I could live with that either. It would be rather brave of you if you reported them to the police. Perhaps an anonymous tipoff might work.... That sounds like a very difficult position that you are in.

You can only know your purpose in life when you know who you are in Christ Jesus. When you accept Him as your personal Savior and Lord, you will find your true purpose and can grow from that.

Yes, when we do not live from our true purpose, we can't grow into our true self for God then either. We need to stay connected to the vine to bear fruit for God, which is the purpose behind any individual purpose for us too. God has an individual purpose for each of us, and a collective purpose too, for us to grow, and to add fruit to his harvest.

My approach has been living my life as if God is watching over me. That keeps me well-grounded. Others too feel valued by that approach as they realize they are not excluded in our common journey. It puts at rest a feeling of isolation but invites cooperation and inclusion.

Yes, with God keeping tabs on you, you would not stray into displaying bad reactionary responses to others. You would not like God to see you acting irrationally, irresponsibly, reactively, and nastily to others. God excludes no one, and neither should we. We should remain ourselves, whilst keeping contact with God, so that we are not stretched into being something grotesque by other's treatment of us, in our living.

@Shiva49 And yet, something must be on God's table to achieve as a result of his plan, which can never have a fly in its ointment, or to be flawed. All must work out for the best in the end, otherwise, God, would not be God. We just need to trust his plan, for now, and try to go along with it as best we can determine what it is, for us, and for the world too.

@innertalks Yes, God puts up with us showing his unmatchable patience that we should emulate to our utmost. In the overall scheme of things, we should be ready to make the ultimate sacrifice and with God watching over us, it would not be in vain. After all, so many innocents get killed for no fault of theirs, including babies. Only such an approach gives us purpose in our lives as we still grope in the dark at the monstrosity of our never-ending warring and killing. At the end of the day, our priorities are "much ado about nothing".
