Friends, please first join me in celebrating a great blessing. I stepped on the scale this morning and I’ve hit 50 pounds lost exactly. That’s a good reason to play a Jimmy Buffett song! (So’s warm weather, cold weather, or a day that ends in “Y”. ) Here’s another one of my absolute favorites. #3: The Captain and the Kid Buffett was the kid. James Delaney Buffett Sr. was the captain. He was 82 when he died in Pascagoula on January 2, 1970. (I looked that up in Newspaper archives.) Obviously, Captain Buffett had a profound effect on his grandson’s lifestyle. When Buffett died in September, I (along with a lot of other fans) posted a verse out of this song as a fitting tribute: He’s somewhere on the ocean now The place he ought to be With one hand on the starboard rail He’s waving back at me Buffett said he pitched this song as a songwriter in Nashville. The guy at the publishing company thought it was great, but too sad. “Change that part at the end about him dying,” the executive said. “But he did die,” Buffett said. He didn’t change a thing, and we got one of the best songs in Buffett’s catalog. Sad, somber, but a celebration of family influence.
