Goodbye, 2023. You took a lot of my music favorites, so I’m not the least bit sad to see you go. One of the casualties of the concluding year was Jimmy Buffett. I’ve been saluting his 55-year career this month, when he would have turned 77. Thanks for hanging with me, those of you who don’t like him. Here’s my favorite Buffett song. #1: Island A few years ago, in honor of @LouAvul ‘s cruises, I did an “Island-hopping” top ten. This song topped the list. Earlier in my tenure here on myLot I did a top ten Buffett list. This topped the list. Remember Simon & Garfunkel’s “I Am a Rock”? This is the total antithesis of that song. That’s an angry, bitter song, where the narrator closes in after too much pain (“if I never loved I never would have cried”). Here, Buffett acknowledges the “need for love, heart and soul accompaniment” that separates them, metaphorically. Being an introvert and not a “people person,” this song resonates with me a lot. Always has, always will. Fair winds and following seas to the son of a son of a sailor. Thanks for the music, Jimmy. And thank y’all for reading.
