When I was about nine years old my mother remarried and we moved to Pocatello from Boise, Idaho. She became a member of a group of women who got together each week to play Pinnochle. The woman who hosted the get-together would also serve as something for them to enjoy in between games. My mother had $60 a month(this was in the early 60's)for groceries. She fed the four of us( I had a stepbrother) very well plus always had a fine creation to serve the ladies when it was her turn to host. One time I remember she fixed a grape parfait creation. It was made from my grandmother's canned Concord grape juice. This tasty perfection was a real hit and my mom got rave reviews. The women loved it!

The parfait? I wish I'd had her write it down. I know she made it into a king of a jello and then added whipped cream.

@RebeccasFarm .......She thought it all up herself. No media to check for recipes back then.

You were lucky to have a mom who was such good cook. I am sure you have lovely memories about all the good food that she fed you. My mom and grandma were wonderful cooks and I am carrying forward that in legacy . I hope that my children do that too. My elder one is not much interested in cooking ( she can cook really yummy food though), but my younger one cooks very well

I do have great memories. Some cooks are just great and others don't want to do the work.

@celticeagle Cooking is a skill that everyone has to know. But some would be really extraordinary with the skills. They just love cooking and enjoy it thoroughly. They cook with so much passion and love.

You were lucky to have a mom who could cook so well, My mom also made awesome meals from what she learned from her mom in Latvia. I know the recipes but I would not make so much food for just me but nice memories,

Couldn't make some and put some in the freezer for another time?

@celticeagle I could but it would take getting all the ingredients together and spending a day cooking etc. I order my groceries once a month so perhaps next time I might think of a recipe and try it and then freeze some. Just there is something about the quality of meat that is not right,

$60 a month went very far in the 60s. I remember spending $25 for groceries and getting steak and bubbly. You were lucky to have a mom that could cook. Have a good evening.

I remember them days when we would have a family lunchion & every 1 would pitch in to cook & serve & clean b-4 leaving. Them days are hard to find now days & that's what kept a family together back in them days but not any more.
