Having a Night Time Vigil For Our Cable

Well, I called Sparklight, our cable company, earlier and set up the cancellation of our cable. Of course, Murphy's Law raised its comical head and I couldn't get the cancellation done this month because the billing cycle begins on the 16th and is ready to go in. So, I have it set up for February 12th. We have had cable for so long and my daughter and I watch so much television that it is rather like cutting off an arm because of our losing the convenience of it all but, we have found Philo. It has 70+ channels and most of the ones we were enjoying on cable. Can you believe it?! Now get a load of this: We were paying nearly $300 for cable and internet but I found Philo which is only $25 a month and has most of the channels available that we were paying a premium for from Sparklight. And, I don't have to pay the $9.20 monthly for a sports package I don't even use. So. I am paying $74.72 for Philo and 4 other apps plus about $98 for the internet. So that is about $173 a month where we were paying $281.53 plus 4 apps. And, this summer when the AT&T gal comes through here again we will get their internet package which is fiber optic and not the electrical wire setup we have now. She gave me a quote of $70. Another saving of $28. Cha-ching! Now, beginning in March, we will be paying $172.71 instead of $281.53. That's a savings of $108.82. Not bad, huh?

CHA-CHING is right, that's GREAT, sounds like what we did getting off cable a while back we went from 200 a month to 100$ that's with internet & free internet channels from you tube.

@celticeagle yeah it is, it has really made our lives better cause NOW we can pay like 500 & that will pay like 5 mons & not have to worry about a high bill.

I keep meaning to call my cable company... I'm paying way too much for just internet...$137.26 and they said they'll be raising the rate in March I think.

And still have access to what we want to see. Cami likes MeTV and Cozi and now she'll have other channels with comparable shows. I always make sure she has what makes her happy.

@celticeagle It sounds like you found a good deal. I hated the cable I had and there was nothing to replace it so suffered through till Netflix came along and it was cheaper and my technician takes care of it and when i had problems he got me a streaming box and it worked better. When I had cable they would not do anything and sent technicians that did not listen to the problem and only changed the box all the time and the problem still existed. The programs were repeats and hated it so now I have Netflix and love it and have lots to watch and I also love watching TV.

I think I did. I have had Netflix since shortly after they opened. I used to get their movies sent to me. Now I just stream. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your cable co. My cable was good and when the techs came out they did a good job. I have been with what is now Sparklight since the late 90's. I am so happy with Philo. I have a free week trial and am checking it all out for my daughter and I.

@celticeagle The cable I had would bother me because they needed maybe to fill their quota on customers but since they were so bad I never went back and never gave into them. I love Netflix. So do you have both Netflix and Sparklight or just checking out if Sparklight is something you want? I reread what you wrote and found out that you do not have Netflix anymore. What did you not like about it? I get new things all the time and there is a period I do not watch TV or listen to music and get behind so have more to watch when the period is over and I can go back to TV and music again.

I'm glad you're cutting cable and have a better alternative with Philo. I hope AT&T works for you. They have the worst customer service. There is nothing that could make me switch to them. If you have another alternative, I would check it out.

Good job. We have considered many times cancelling cable; but hubs wants all the channels even though there is never anything to watch. We pay $270.15 for internet, phone and TV; and I think it's highway robbery! Have a good day and stay warm.
