This Monday although the cyclone was class 1, people had to go to work. Within a few hours, we went from class 1 to class 3 just in one day. There was a flood due to heavy rainfall. Many cars were damaged, and two people lost their lives. Although the responsible people of the government of Mauritius were warned that there could be a flood they hid the situation from the public and people went to work. Within just a few hours everything went downhill. Belal hit many houses. People's furniture, food, clothes, and electronics were damaged. Today is Thursday and there are still around 3000 houses without electricity. On that day, I was lucky I could convince my hubby not to leave the house. Water got inside our house from 5 different spots. My hubby and I did our best to stop the water by clothes and big cooking pots. There was no electricity for many hours throughout Mauritius. Without electricity food kept in the freezer went bad. Let's say 2024 scarred many of us this year and won't be forgotten by many. Have you ever been hit by a storm? How bad was it?

Sorry you went through a storm this week. I hope the water that flooded flowed away. The only storm that hit us was El nino.

Yes, it did flow away but left damages and a huge mess behind. Not to mention many damaged vehicles.

I'm sorry you had such a bad storm. I hope the power is restored soon. We don't get storms of that nature. Here we get snow and blizzards, which we just had this past week when we got 13.5 inches of snow. Now, we have frigid temperatures. Next week it warms up.

Thank you for the message, Val. That's good to hear. I also prefer war weather to winter. What's a blizzard?

Here we seem to be having the opposite response nowadays - we get storm warnings it seems on a regular basis and then for most people, nothing much happens. The area where we live has always been prone to flooding, with a river nearby and lots of small springs and water channels that are easy to not even notice until a lot of rain comes. This autumn we had a lot of rain, so the ground was already very wet, and then we had a lot more rain over a couple of days. Several roads were flooded and some houses. In our previous house we were almost flooded one time so when we moved we made sure this house is uphill! Hope you didn't suffer too much damage. Food in the freezer should be able to stay frozen for several hours even without power as long as the door is kept closed.

Does insurance cover the damages? In Mauritius only rich people have their houses insured. Even most of the cars aren't covered.
