I’m more of a backstage person

So I mentioned a while ago that I’m involved with the local amateur dramatics society. The girls and I all joined three years ago and we were all in the chorus. I’m obviously just not a natural performer. I don’t generally seek out the limelight and I actually found the rehearsals rather tedious and the waiting about to go on stage a bit of a bore. The actual performance itself was fun, but it didn’t seem worth the stress. I was always worried that I would mess things up and go the wrong way or something, and in rehearsals if I did do something wrong I felt that everyone was looking at me in exasperation, but in reality it was other people who did things wrong on show nights and they all just laughed it off. And on top of that I didn’t find the group to be quite as friendly and welcoming as they make themselves out to be. Many were pleasant enough, but there are some members who haven’t spoken to me yet! Maybe it’s the artistic temperament. Anyway after two years of that I decided to have a change. I might have left but Little One was still keen to be involved, so I joined the backstage crew, and I have to confess I am enjoying it much more! The backstage people are all lovely and we’ve been having a lot of fun, making props and building the set. It’s amazing how you can create magic with bits of this and that and some creative lighting. We’ve been messing about with plywood and expanded polystyrene, papier maché and paint and scraps of fabric. Here’s Sleeping Beauty’s bed, transformed from an old hospital gurney. Makes me want to lie on it myself! But in the end it’s the people you work with who really make a difference. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2024.

@fleura How you felt about messing things up on stage - that’s how I feel about life, always afraid I’ll get it wrong.

I can relate to being a person who does not like the limelight myself.

You do strike me as the more active/creative type, and certainly not a temperamental diva like performers can be.

@Fleura They were dramas. I remember one "Grand Nieces from Town" where I was the fashionable niece . We were being tested and the simpler one got the legacy (lol)

You have to do what makes you happy. Nothing wrong with being more of a backstage person.

People that you work with make all the differences in the world. If you like the people you enjoy what you are doing.

In the end it's all about the people isn't it? Even the most tedious job is bearable if you have good company and can laugh about it.

I'm glad you found your niche in the acting world. I always wanted to be on stage and took classes in high school and during the summer at an outdoor theater. Have a good week.
