What Do Our Political Parties Believe in?

Republicans believe in small government, local control, Christian authority, and the power of free markets. However, they also believe Homosexuals do not deserve equal rights, taxes should be lower, the military should be strong, and that private industry can always do better than the government. The Republican Party is associated with conservative reforms. Democrats believe in social and economic equality, that the economy should work for everyone, that health care is a right, that our diversity is our strength, and that democracy is worth defending. Democrats advocate for civil rights, worker rights, less-strict immigration laws, back social welfare programs such as Medicaid and food stamps, and gun control. The Democratic Party is generally associated with progressive reforms. Independents do not identify or lean towards any certain party. About 38% of Americans describe themselves as independents. But 17% lean toward Democrats and 13% lean toward the Republican Party. The platform stresses the importance of the Christian faith and believes in a less powerful federal government. There are also the Libertarian Party, Green Party, Constitution Party, and Reform Party but these parties have not been as successful in gaining national prominence. I am proud to be a Democrat.
