I went to visit my friend the other day and I saw she had some different cushion covers. I told her they looked nice but the fabric looked sort of familiar. She told me that she had sorted out some old shirts and blouses that she and her husband no longer wore . She had made these shirts and blouses into some interesting looking cushion covers. I thought this was a good way to recycle old clothes.

It is always a good idea not to throw but to recycle what we can recycle.

It also saved her money because she did not have to buy any new cushion covers.

@LadyDuck We use our old sheets as dust covers when we decorate.

Yes, that is a good way of recycling old clothes. I never thought of that before.

It was a good idea. I have some old blouses that I do not want to throw away or give away, but they are fraying in places so I cannot wear them anymore. Maybe I will copy her idea.

@sharonelton Sewing is not everybody`s cup of tea. I suppose I am lucky because I learned needlework from and early age. We learned it in school but I don`t think they teach it any more. At least somebody else gets to use your clothes when you no longer need them.

@lazydaizee That's a good idea. Maybe you should. I can't sow. When my clothes wear out I pur them in the fabric recycle in the big Tesco!

I use old shirts for patchwork, there's quite a lot of fabric in a man's shirt! It's what everyone used to do before fabric and clothing became so cheap. It's also something we should consider taking up again. It can save us money and recycling saves resources.

@lazydaizee always best to start with a small thing for your first patchwork. A quilt is a lot of sewing! Bags, cushion covers, lap quilts are quicker to make so you don't get fed up before you finish.

@KarenAnne Thanks for your advice. I did get fed up with the quilt because it was taking too long, but with a smaller item, I can see the end result quicker.

What sort of things do you make from your patchwork? I can remember starting to make a patchwork quilt, but I did not finish it. Somebody had given me some scraps of velvet curtain fabric to make it with. I now realise that heavy velvet is not a good choice of fabric to use for patchwork.
