February is Black History Month and here are a few things I am learning:
Founded in 1909 the NAACP(National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is America's oldest and largest civil rights organization.
The Supreme Court ordered Montgomery, Alabama to integrate its bus system after a 381-day protest on segregated seating back in 1955.
Sidney Poitier won the Oscar in 1963 for his role in "Lilies of the Field. He was the first Black actor to win one and he went on to become a hero to Blacks and Whites alike.
Thurgood Marshal was the first African American to serve as Supreme Court Justice being confirmed in 1967. He is also most noted as winning the Brown v. Board of Education case in 1954 which ruled school segregation unconstitutional.
The first African American woman to win the Poet Laureate in America was Rita Dove who served from 1993 to 1995. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1987 for her book "Thomas and Beulah". This made her the second to win this honor with Gwendolyn Brooks being the first in 1950.

There are so many things about this part of the US History I have learned along many years. I was very interested in it ever since I was young although then we did not have Black people in our country. But I was young when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was alive and he became one of my heros. And another Black American was also one of my heros for different reasons. I would have never have become interested in box if it wasn´t for the bigger than life Muhammad Ali. I think that you are maybe the only country that underlines so much each race in spite of mixed races, We would never say African Chilean or Native Chilean. It just sounds weird to me.

I lived through all the Dr. King and the shooting. I also was quite astounded by Ali. I think my country is very interested in DNA and who we are as people. Hopefully, DeSantos won't help to take that away from us in book bans and such.
