Day 19 – Everlasting Covenant
Genesis 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD (Jehovah) appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty Shadday, shad-dah'-ee) God (El); walk before Me and be blameless. 2 I will make My covenant between Me and you and will multiply you exceedingly.”
3 Then Abram fell on his face, and God (Elohiym) talked with him, saying, 4 “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you will be a father of many nations. 5 No longer will your name be Abram, but your name will be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God (Elohiym) to you and your descendants after you. 8 Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God (Elohiym).”
9 God (Elohiym) said to Abraham, “As for you, you will keep My covenant, you, and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant which you will keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you will be circumcised; 11 and you will be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 He who is eight days old among you will be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant will be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 The uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
15 Then God (Elohiym) said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you will not call her name Sarai, but Sarah will be her name. 16 I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she will be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”
17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? Will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
18 Abraham said to God (Elohiym), “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”
19 Then God (Elohiym) said, “No, Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you will call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him. 20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He will bare twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time next year.”
22 Then He finished talking with him, and God (Elohiym) went up from Abraham.
23 So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that same day, as God (Elohiym) had said to him.
24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
25 Ishmael, his son, was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
26 That same day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised, 27 and all the men of his house, born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
God’s name:
Jehovah – Self-existent, Eternal
Elohiym – Supreme God, Mighty God
God’s character:
El Shadday – Almighty God
Covenant maker.
Provider
What do you do when someone tells you they’re giving you something, but for you to receive it, you need to do something painful? Would you do it?
Jehovah came to Abram and proclaimed He was Almighty God, El Shadday. Then He told him to walk blameless before Him. It was God’s preamble for what He would do for Abram.
God’s (Elohiym’s) plan:
1. Multiply him exceedingly.
2. Make him a father of nations.
3. Change his name to Abraham.
4. He would become fruitful – kings and nations would come from him.
5. His covenant was everlasting.
6. Give him the land of Canaan.
7. Give him a son.
8. Change Sarai’s name to Sarah.
9. She would be the mother of kings and nations.
10. He would bless him.
God’s (Elohiym’s) requirement—circumcision. God (Elohiym) told him he needed to cut off the foreskin so He wouldn’t cut off the people of Abraham’s household, his servants, or his seed after him. Those who would not cut off the foreskin, God (Elohiym) would cut off.
Cutting the foreskin is painful, yet Abraham obeyed God (Elohiym) immediately. The same day God (Elohiym) gave the command to Abraham, he circumcised himself and every male in his household.
If you knew the blessings God (Elohiym) would give you, would you obey Him no matter how painful His request?
God’s (Elohiym’s) blessings are eternal. When God (Elohiym) made the covenant with Abraham, it wasn’t for him alone, but for every generation to follow.
You became part of Abraham’s blessing when you accepted Jesus (Yeshuwa) as your Savior (Mashiyach) and Lord (Kurios). You promised to obey Him in everything He told you. You committed yourself to Him.
What did you circumcise, cut off? Did you cut off old relationships that didn’t honor God (Elohiym). Did you make the LORD (Jehovah) first place in your life? Did you cut off your past, every sin that bound you to your old life?
When you look back at your old life, what changes did you make? Are you a different person today because of your relationship with Jesus Christ (Yeshuwa Christos)?
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ (Christos), he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (NKJV)
If you haven’t cut off all ties to your past. If your past still brings you shame and disgrace because of the sin that follows you everywhere. It’s time to make a change in your life and cut off the old to make way for the new, a new life of obedience to Jesus Christ.
God’s (Elohiym’s) blessings far outweigh everything the world offers. The world offers pleasure for a moment. God (Elohiym) offers you eternal blessings.
Let’s pray: Father, change me as I cut off my past and make You my Savior and Lord. Give me Your eternal blessings as I trust You to change me from the inside out to walk blameless before You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

It is hard for me to imagine why God wanted a 99-year-old man to be circumcised, as surely he could have let the older ones go, and just started this practice with infants, if that is what he wanted.
It is also indicated here that God condoned slavery, by not telling Abram to stop buying/owning people.
We could say that God was just being a God for the times, but as God is unchangeable, this idea does not hold up.
God should have told them not to practice slavery, as it was not a part of his plan for humans to do this to other humans.

Circumcision is a requirement of the covenant God made with Abraham. If he hadn't circumcised himself, God would have cut him off as the father of nations and our Savior would have come from another person. Timing is everything with God. As the earth was already a couple thousand years old by this time, people were no longer pure. Circumcision would filter out the bloodline, so it remained pure from that point forward. It was necessary for many reasons for Abraham to obey God.
As for the slavery issue, God knew man would enslave men. Just as He made a way for divorce in the law, He made a way for slavery.
Have a blessed day.

@innertalks Paul was talking about the law. Jesus fulfilled the law. However, the covenant God made with Abraham is an everlasting covenant. It's still in force.

@just4him Well, these days, that covenant is mostly only still being kept by the Jews still, as Saint Paul said that it was ok not to be circumcised.
Galatians, chapter 5, verse 2.
"Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing."
Christ does not require all men to undergo this procedure it seems.
