The Zoo in Almaty in Winter

When I was in Kazakhstan, I spent a lot of time exploring the country. It's an exotic place and one cannot find any influence of Islam. You do not find the Burkha there and the dress is as modern as any European country. Bars dot he capital Almaty. I am going to tell you something about the zoo there, in winter, it snows heavily and temperatures can reach -10, and the tropical animals in ordinary conditions cannot survive. The zoo authorities have thus made available for the animals a temperature-controlled environment. The African lion and other animals are kept in special heated enclosures with a glass glass on one side for the visitor to watch. I was particularly impressed with the hippopotamus who was floating around in the water in a specially temperature-controlled enclosure. One may not agree with many people to cage these animals away from their natural habitat. But then the second point is that children and people in such cold climates can visit these animals and see them in a controlled environment. This I think is a pretty good thing. The zoo in Almati is spread over many acres. There is also a cafeteria there and it's a wonderful place. Frankly, I liked it very much.

Ah hippos, here are a few warming themselves in the early morning winter sun, was 6C if I remember correctly (My image at Divundu) . Amazing how they can house tropical animals in snow weather. Agree with you on the caging, but then again it would be the way I prefer to see some animals, like snakes.

Thank you, yes , a lot of dedication goes into looking after animals in snowy weather but overall I think it's a good thing. Nice photograph of the hippos.
