Day 37 – Honorable Genesis 38:1 It happened at the time that Judah departed from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah. 2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua, and he married her and went in unto her. 3 So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er. 4 She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan. 5 She conceived yet again and bore a son and called his name Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him. 6 Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7 But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD (Jehovah), and the LORD (Jehovah) killed him. 8 Judah said to Onan, “Go in unto your brother’s wife and marry her and raise up an heir to your brother.” 9 Onan knew the heir would not be his; and it happened, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. 10 The thing which he did displeased the LORD (Jehovah); therefore, He killed him also. 11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house till my son Shelah is grown.” For he said, “Lest he also die like his brothers.” Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house. 12 Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah’s wife, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 It was told Tamar, saying, “Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.” 14 So she took off her widow’s garments, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place which was on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot because she had covered her face. 16 Then he turned to her, and said, “Please let me come in unto you”; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come to me?” 17 He said, “I will send a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge till you send it?” 18 Then he said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” Then he gave them to her and went into her, and she conceived by him. 19 So she arose and went away and laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood. 20 Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand, but he did not find her. 21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, “Where is the harlot who was openly by the roadside?” They said, “There was no harlot in this place.” 22 He returned to Judah and said, “I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this place.” 23 Then Judah said, “Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her.” 24 It happened, about three months after, that Judah was told, saying, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore, she is with child by harlotry.” Judah said, “Bring her out and let her be burned!” 25 When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man to whom these belong, I am with child.” And she said, “Please determine whose these are —the signet and cord, and staff.” 26 Judah acknowledged them and said, “She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son.” He never knew her again. 27 Now it happened, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb. 28 So it was, when she gave birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.” 29 Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, “How did you break through? This breach be upon you!” Therefore, his name was Perez. 30 Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand. His name was Zerah. God’s name: Jehovah – Self-existent, Eternal Elohiym – Mighty God Yeshuwa – Jesus God’s character: Judge Do you keep your word when you make a promise to do something for someone? Or do you forget, or decide not to keep your promise because of unfavorable circumstances? Judah married a Canaanite woman and had three sons. He also gave his firstborn son to a Canaanite woman as his wife. When his son’s actions displeased Jehovah, He killed him and killed the second son because he didn’t want to raise an heir to his deceased brother. When Judah saw that his sons were dead at the hand of Jehovah, he told Tamar to stay in her father’s house until his youngest son was old enough to marry and he could raise an heir for his brother. She did as he asked. Yet when his third son was old enough to marry, Judah didn’t give him to her because he was afraid Jehovah would kill him too. Tamar took matters into her own hands and played the harlot when Judah went to shear his sheep and became pregnant by him. Judah learned of her harlotry but didn’t know it was she who played the harlot when he went to shear the sheep. Unknowing, he had her brought to him to have her killed for her actions. However, he learned she was pregnant with his child and realized his sin by withholding his son from her. When she gave birth, she had twins. Elohiym will always preserve the lineage leading to Yeshuwa. What do you know about Yeshuwa’s lineage? You know He came from the tribe of Judah. Did you know the line wasn’t pure? Judah married a Canaanite woman and had a son by a Canaanite woman, a direct descendent of Yeshuwa. Jehovah allowed Judah to bear children by a woman, not from Israel. Why would He do that? Elohiym told Abraham he would be the father of nations, and kings would come from him. He gave the same promise to Isaac and Jacob. Judah was the great-grandson of Abraham. To him was born a son of a Canaanite woman, who found her way into Yeshuwa’s lineage. Matthew 1:3 Judah bore Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez bore Hezron, and Hezron bore Ram. Jehovah showed that everyone could be part of Elohiym’s kingdom. Not only Jews. He paved the way for your salvation. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (NKJV) Tamar became a whoever when she bore Judah’s son, and you became a whoever when you accepted Yeshuwa as your Savior and Lord. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for accepting me as Your child when I accepted Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Help me tell others about Your love for everyone and no one is excluded from Your love and salvation. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. It seems that Judah was a lustful man, going with someone who he thought was a harlot. He was lucky that God didn't kill him too, for such an act, and yet, God then made this happening happen to fit into his plan too. It seems that God uses fair means, and foul, to get his plans implemented then.

God's ways aren't our ways. To call them foul is to give God human characteristics when we have no idea why He does what He does. I also wouldn't call Judah lustful. He was faithful to his wife as long as she lived. When he finished mourning her, he felt her absence. Tamar took advantage of his loneliness.

@innertalks Yes, it does. Those He killed instantly, as in the priests who tried to steady the Ark of the Covenant when David brought it back from the Philistines, knew the proper way to handle the Ark, and knew the consequences. I'm glad you're faithful.

@just4him God certainly gives a long rope to some, and allows them to stray a long distance from him, but others, as soon as they sin, he killed them on the spot. Yes, God's ways are certainly beyond our understanding, and in human terms, he could be described as ruthless, angry, and vengefully impatient at times, but I guess, like us all, he has his reasons for showing these sides of himself to different people for different reasons. Loneliness, in my eyes, should not lead anyone to go to a harlot, but I guess he felt like that, lonely, at that time, and gave into his weakness of the flesh. Faithfulness to my wife would not include me going to a harlot either.
