Day 38 – Prosperity
Genesis 39:1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who took him down there.
2 The LORD (Jehovah) was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 His master saw the LORD (Jehovah) was with him and that the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand.
4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority.
5 So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the LORD (Jehovah) blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD (Jehovah) was on all that he had in the house and in the field.
6 Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
7 It happened after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”
8 He refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all he has to my hand. 9 There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph, day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.
11 It happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside, 12 that she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” He left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.
13 So it was, when she saw he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside, 14 that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in unto us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. 15 It happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”
16 She kept his garment with her until his master came home.
17 Then she spoke to him with words like these, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in unto me to mock me; 18 so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”
19 So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,” that his anger was aroused.
20 Then Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. He was there in the prison.
21 The LORD (Jehovah) was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
22 The keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.
23 The keeper of the prison did not investigate anything that was under Joseph’s authority, because the LORD (Jehovah) was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD (Jehovah) made it prosper.
God’s name:
Jehovah – Self-existent, Eternal
God’s character:
Protector
Have you thought you couldn’t get into more trouble, or have so many things gone wrong in your life that nothing more could happen, and then it did? It wasn’t the school bully that got in trouble, it was you. Trouble seemed to follow everywhere you went. Yet through everything, you kept your integrity.
Joseph’s brothers sold him to the Ishmeelites who took him to Egypt and sold him as a slave to Potiphar. Jehovah was with Joseph in everything he did. He prospered everything in Potiphar’s house because of Joseph. With His blessing, Potiphar made him overseer of everything he had in the field and the house. However, Potiphar’s wife sought to bring trouble against Joseph by wanting him to lie with her. When he refused, she planned a meeting he couldn’t get out of. Yet, he fled from her leaving his garment in her hands. When Potiphar heard what his wife said, he became angry and had Joseph cast into prison. While in prison, Jehovah continued to bless Joseph and prosper everything he did so that the warden made him overseer in the prison.
There are many conniving people in the world who will do and say anything to get what they want. It doesn’t matter to them how many people they destroy to get what they want. What they never consider is your commitment to Jehovah. They want the one thing you have that they can’t touch. So, they will find a way to make trouble for you.
You would think Potiphar would know the type of person Joseph was and what type of person his wife was. He did. It wasn’t any prison he put Joseph in. It was the king’s prison. Potiphar was the king’s executioner. He could have had him executed. Instead, the same blessing Potiphar enjoyed because of Joseph, was also found in the prison.
When you think things couldn’t get worse, look at the blessing in your life. See Jehovah’s hand in keeping you safe from harm. You could be dead. Instead, you’re alive. Look at how Jehovah is working in those around you because of you. Don’t look at the outward appearance of your situation. Look at the blessing. See the prosperity. Jehovah has everything under control.
When you look back at your life, you can see how Jehovah kept you safe in every circumstance. It’s easy to see what’s behind you. It’s hard to see the future. Yet, when you look at your future from Jehovah’s perspective, and see how He kept you safe from harm throughout your life, and see the blessings He gave you, you can know Jehovah will continue to bless and prosper you. You only need to trust Him.
Satan will continue to bring trouble your way. No matter what he does, Jehovah is in control. He will bless and prosper you when you put everything in His hand.
Let’s pray: Father, help me see Your blessing and prosperity in my life when it seems to spiral out of control. Let me know You have control of my life and I have nothing to fear because You are always with me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

God had bigger and better plans for Joseph, but those plans didn't materialize until he went though the hardships he did. And through it all, Joseph kept his faith in God.

Joseph did well to resist the lustful advances of Potiphar's wife, and God continued to bless him for his steadfastness.
Joseph seemed to be a decently honest man.
