I'm a Bit Miffed

Do you check your FICO score very often? I don't that often but just did and I have noticed that my score has dropped considerably. Yet I am paying payments and paying my credit card balance each month. My grandson got his Risperdal claim last Spring and with a bit of the money he let me pay off all my bills. So I was paid up on everything and my FICO score was about 748 or so from then until late this last year. Now I checked after not checking for several months and my score is suddenly down to 688 and I don't understand why it has dropped so much. Now I only have two bills(besides the rent, internet, and power) and the apps I get. I really don't get it. I'm not going to get more credit just so my score will go up. That's what it seems like they want you to do. Any ideas? Is your FICO doing well?

I have never checked my credit score. What is a reason to need this information?

@paigea .......Not sure. Just wondered what it was and so I checked it. I'm not going to worry about it any more. Just going to be sure all are paid each month like I have been doing.

Did you close any accounts lately? Or did any companies close any accounts of yours due to lack of use? After not checking mine for 20 years, I did, and was happy to see it was better than I even imagined. Then Lane Bryant closed my credit card account because I had not used it in six years. That brought down my score eight points, although just recently it went back up six points. That’s all I can think of unless someone else has a card in your name, and is not paying the full balance off each month. Do any of your family have a shared credit card with you?

I check my other credit scores a few times a week, but I cannot find a free way to check my FICO scores.

@dfollin For the FICO scores, Experian once gave me mine for free. Did you happen to check them?

Not lately no. And my credit actually went up when I closed some I guess because they were paid off. Yes, my daughter has her name on my credit card. I bet that is it.

I think that's normal. My score goes up and down and I have some credit cards paid off. I'm only holding a balance on two and pay more than the minium each month. At one time I was debt-free and it bounced around a bit.

@celticeagle That's a good thing. You don't want to over borrow.

Credit scores are for the financial institutions and they tell them whether they can make money off you. If you're not using credit your score will go down. I worked in a call centre for one of the major credit card companies. Learned quite a lot about credit. Credit gurus online constantly spread myths. One thing I learned when taking credit card applications is that financial advisors almost always have bad credit. They also think that I've got rocks in my head when I tell them what they're doing wrong. Biggest thing to remember is credit scores are a tool for the bank they are not for your benefit. They have everything to do with how much money the bank can make and nothing to do with your integrity and honesty.

Has your credit card balance increased lately? The ratio of debt to income will make your numbers rise and fall. We have an excellent credit score; but it does fluctuate a little bit if our cc balance goes up. Have a good day.

They do that ..dip it down even though you are making payments and they have all kinds of reasons ..not really valid I feel. Yeah it does seem that they want you to get more credit cards. Nonsense!!

Pure nonsense. I will keep paying my balance each month as best I can and not worry about it anymore. It's not that bad and I am not getting more credit cards.
