Trying a new fish fillet recipe

Since moving to a condo unit in the city, it’s been a challenge to cook fish. For one, there isn’t a fresh fish market nearby. Second, the one-bedroom unit that we’re renting has but one balcony window that’s at the opposite end of our kitchen. My cooking area has a well-functioning exhaust but that isn’t enough to cancel all the fishy smell that comes from cooking fish, especially if it’s something that would require some frying. Ugh. I’ve tried all sorts of natural and artificial ways to eliminate odor. In the end, the only best solution is to just buy cooked fish dishes from hawkers near our apartment. They’re not bad but they’re not as good as our home-cooked versions. Anyways, as we spend weekends in this big country house, we take the opportunity to cook and eat as much fish as we can. Last Saturday, I finally got to make this fish fillet recipe that I’d been watching on Pinterest. It’s fried breaded cream dory with sauteed tomatoes and garlic in lots of olive oil and topped with freshly chopped basil leaves. I was so surprised to see my younger daughter enjoy it so much – and to think that she used to dislike fish fillet! There’s a few more recipes in my Pinterest boards that I hope to try when we move to a bigger apartment next month. This new unit has plenty of windows to air out the fishy odor. I’m excited to go back to my pescatarian diet again. Have you tried any new recipes lately? How did they turn out?

I love to eat fried fish but the fish smell stays in the kitchen. I now only eat fried fish when I go out. But I can bake fish in my small over the counter electric oven and it does not smell so much. I put foil over it for part of the cooking. It helps and the fish doesn´t get dry. I add a sauce in the last 5 minutes .

I will have to learn how to bake or broil fish then. These days I've been watching video tutorials on how to smoke fish using a stove-top steamer and how to make Spanish-style fish using olive oil and some spices.

Thanks. We all loved this new recipe. It's simple and it's something that you can make out of simple ingredients.

I like a lot this recipe. I like fried fish, but the kitchen smells bad when you fry fish.

I notice that as I grow older, I become more averse to the fishy smell. It's the same for someone I know, and she said it's probably related to hormonal changes in the body.

@almostoveryou - I was always annoyed by the smell of fish and it's hard to get rid of it, even opening the windows.

I can no longer cook or bake. I'm not a big fish fan; but I'm glad you are able to enjoy it. Have a good week.

@almostoveryou Yes, both of us have health challenges. My husband will cook on occasion but not that often. He has trouble standing for any length of time. You enjoy your day/night as well!!!

I remember that you and your husband prefer to buy food rather than cook. It's more convenient that way. I hope to have more seafood until Easter. Next week, when we return to the city, I'll be back to buying fried fish from hawkers. Enjoy your day/night!

That looks really good. I don't cook fish at my place for the same reason. The smell lingers. I will have it when I go out to eat. I have not tried any new recipes lately but I do have many bookmarked on my computer that I intend to try some day.

@almostoveryou Yes for sure. You would need a well ventilated space for that.

I hope you get to try them. I have a number of Pinterest boards related to cooking. These days, I'm trying to learn how to smoke fish using a stove-top steamer by watching videos on YouTube. I'll have to try it when we move to a bigger, more well-ventilated space.

I sure will, Judy, because it's got two rooms and two toilet and baths now. Plus two balconies and plenty of windows. Thanks!
