New Car Prices

Tonight I am just browsing used cars in my area that are for sale. But the new 2024 models are popping up too. Some of these brand new cars cost almost as much as the house I was wanting to buy! Who the heck buys a car that costs as much as a house? This is nothing new. Years ago, I decided my favorite type of car is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. At that time, a brand new one was $25,000, cheap for today's prices. But it was the amount of a small house even back then. The second you drive your car off the lot it depreciates so much. What about you? What is your favorite kind of car and would you buy a brand new one or a used one? I am going for used.

We purchased a new car in September to replace our Dodge Carqvan. We are the proud owners of a Nissan Qashqai….it cost more than our first house (1975) and about the same as what we purchase another home for in 1986. I remember my brother purchasing his first brand new car. A 1973 VW Beetle for ~$2000.

My first new car was an AMC Gremlin. Kind of next to the infamous Pinto. Base price was $1995 but mine cost $3695. My mom bought it for me when I left for college. I am in a kind of culture shock looking at the car prices now.

@capirani we owned a Gremlin back in 1976-1980…..we loved that car. Unfortunately when our third child arrived we had outgrown the car.

I don't really have a favourite care. I quite like the look of old Cadillacs, and my dream car was a Lamborghini Countach. Now, I will happily settle for something reliable, practical, and economical It has been a long time since I have owned a car. It hasn't been worthwhile for me. I didn't want to keep buying used cars just to throw money at them for repairs! Of course, I couldn't afford a new one because, as you said, some cost the same as some houses. Nowadays, if I go anywhere, it will be on foot or by public transport. If I need a car, I will hire one. The advantage of that (apart from not having to worry about the upkeep) is that I like to drive different cars and can choose what I need for the occasion. If I am ever in a position of needing a vehicle or I feel it's financially viable again, I am most likely to buy used. If I am every lucky enough to be able to afford a brand new vehicle, I will buy a house

I do not remember the price of my first brand new car. I remember the payments were only $60 a month.

Gremlins came out at $1995 without anything extra. I can remember the commercials. I went to the closest AMC car lot to check on getting one and picked out a pretty burgundy one. They had plaid seats, and this vehicle was pretty. I had to leave to go check on getting my loan. When I got back a truck of new cars had just pulled in, and there was a pretty blue one just off the truck. It had something like 6 miles on it. I asked if I could switch my choice to the blue one. Gremlins have a certain type of stripes, and this blue one had a different, teardrop style of stripes. I test drove it and drove it home with 16 miles on it. I was so proud of that car. It cost me $3995 with the extras. That was in 1976.

We bought both of our cars new. We have a 2015 Scion (Toyota) and a 2018 Subaru. New car prices are now out of sight. Have a good day.
