Ah, so you didn’t care for the 1954 country song featured today? That’s okay. I have such a weird list of music interest that this will eliminate the hayseed from your ears. Not that you’ve ever heard this one, either, but…. Anyway, here’s today’s song that’s turning 40 this year. I Will Dare - The Replacements This was the turning point for Minneapolis’ other contribution to 80s music. (Quick side note: I did see a concert in First Avenue, where a lot of the live music scenes in Purple Rain were filmed. Not Prince, and not The Replacements…saw the BoDeans there.) They moved out of that snotty punk sound and into a more…I don’t want to say “pop” (because there’s nothing “pop” about this song [although the song “Androgynous,” later on the album, definitely has that feel), but maybe more “adult” feel to their music. The lyrics didn’t change a bit, though. I really hate it that these guys didn’t get past the college rock/“cult following” circuit. It made it easier to see them live (once they sobered up a little they were fabulous live, but I pity people who saw them on this tour [I had a bootleg tape of a show on this tour, and it’s funny…but woeful]), but it’s not good for the prosperity. Although most Replacements fans wouldn’t have had it any other way. Cool additional trivia: the guitar on this song is played by R.E.M.’s Peter Buck. I Will Dare Written by Paul Westerberg Recorded by The Replacements From Let It Be, 1984 How young are you? How old am I?

Nope. But I did like REM and even saw them live in Santa Barbara.

I saw REM twice: Honolulu in 1984 and Louisville in 1989.

@FourWalls Good show? I liked the music, but the venue I saw them at wasn't right.

@TheHorse — excellent shows both times. The ‘84 show was weird, because it seemed like most of the audience was there for the local band that was opening. Those of us who were there for REM got a major treat, though.

They didn’t make it into the mainstream, but then a lot of great acts didn’t.

You may know today’s song, but I’m counting on you knowing the 1954 song.
