I don't recall if any of my dogs ever ate the snow. They sort of played in and moved it with their noses.

I have not kept Pets. However, I have seen some Pet dogs eating grass in a few YouTube videos.
So eating snow could be a logical extension for those staying in areas with snow.
May be they find it good for their "digestive" tract.
