Riding Dangerously

I grew up as child of the 70s and a teenager of the 80s. Life was so different back then. In many ways it was much better. One thing, though, that people would debate as being a better aspect is the freedom to ride in the back of pick-up trucks. I know the scales lean more toward it being dangerous. And in most cases I would agree. There was a freedom, though, being in the back of my grandfather's pickup with my brothers and riding down the road to the ice cream shop. My grandfather had very strict rules about staying seated while going down the road. When we got to the icecream shop we could stand up and walk around while eating our icecream. Once I was grown and had small kids in the 90s, they had started passing all those fun-sucking laws and no one could ride in the back of a pick-up anymore. But my dad lived out in the country and he used to let my kids ride in the back of the pick-up down to the pond. Then they would fish off the tail gate. They loved it. I miss those good ole days. photo credit: country living

I remember riding home standing on the tray of the truck. I'd have binder twine/hay bale strings tied to the frame at the front and I'd 'drive' my horse all the way home. Thankfully, I never fell off.

My father had a pickup truck, but never allowed my two brothers and me to ride in the back. I wish he did, but I would not have allowed my own kids to do it. LOL.
