What we woke up to

On our way to the horse-endurance ride last week, we stayed a night with friends at Yabberup. We house-sat there a couple of times and, during the big fires last summer, they were almost burnt out. I wrote several posts about our time there. We had a sheep that died and another one that got fly-blown. You can see some emus in the photo. They are a bit short of food in the forest and have taken to hanging around the house and paddocks. It was lovely to wake up in the morning and see them.

Yes, that's true. I guess there would have been a lot of wild animals that perished.

It sounds like quite an adventure! Staying with friends who live near Yabberup must have been a nice break, despite the challenges they faced during the fires. It's heartbreaking to hear about the sheep, but it's good that you were there to help out. And encountering emus must have been a unique experience! They're such fascinating birds, and seeing them up close must have been a memorable sight.

We had an emu as a pet on our farm before I was married. She laid a lot of eggs while we had her.

@JudyEv How did you acquire her in the first place?

@JudyEv Emus are fascinating birds. Did you raise them for any particular reason, or was it just for the joy of having them as pets?

So different I suppose when you house-sat and when you stayed there as their guest.

Yes, quite different. We had the caravan with us and slept in that but we had a meal with them - and breakfast.

Do they hang around the house because they are being fed by people? I would think that after the fires, they would have plenty of food due to the regrowth of the forests.

@JudyEv Can they reach the fruit on the trees? If so, they are probably enjoying their meals!

I think it takes a while before there is much food around. I don't think these people feed them but the gardens are watered and there are fruit trees, etc.

@moffittjc Yes, they have a good reach on them, at least 6-7 feet.

I'm sorry the fires claimed a sheep, and another got fly blown. I love your picture of the emus.

It was nice to know that not all the wild animals had perished in the fires.

Did the emus lay any fresh eggs for you to enjoy with your breakfast?

No, I'm afraid they didn't! One egg would have made a big omelette!

Nice to see them, but worrying that they are running out of food in their usual habitat.

Now that we've had some rain and look like having more, they should be okay.

Do they make noises? At a distance they remind me of our wild turkeys. They're everywhere here.

I was bowled over when we saw one at a caravan park/pet farm in Ireland. And a myLotter has several times mentioned them getting loose on the roads in America.

Very cool. It was a pity about the sheep. Have a good day.

The owner knew the sheep was pretty frail so it wasn't really a surprise.

They can run fast but they're still need to find somewhere safe to wait out the fires.
