What we woke up to

On our way to the horse-endurance ride last week, we stayed a night with friends at Yabberup. We house-sat there a couple of times and, during the big fires last summer, they were almost burnt out. I wrote several posts about our time there. We had a sheep that died and another one that got fly-blown.
You can see some emus in the photo. They are a bit short of food in the forest and have taken to hanging around the house and paddocks. It was lovely to wake up in the morning and see them.

It sounds like quite an adventure! Staying with friends who live near Yabberup must have been a nice break, despite the challenges they faced during the fires. It's heartbreaking to hear about the sheep, but it's good that you were there to help out. And encountering emus must have been a unique experience! They're such fascinating birds, and seeing them up close must have been a memorable sight.

@JudyEv Emus are fascinating birds. Did you raise them for any particular reason, or was it just for the joy of having them as pets?

So different I suppose when you house-sat and when you stayed there as their guest.

Do they hang around the house because they are being fed by people? I would think that after the fires, they would have plenty of food due to the regrowth of the forests.

@JudyEv Can they reach the fruit on the trees? If so, they are probably enjoying their meals!

@moffittjc Yes, they have a good reach on them, at least 6-7 feet.

I was bowled over when we saw one at a caravan park/pet farm in Ireland. And a myLotter has several times mentioned them getting loose on the roads in America.

Very cool. It was a pity about the sheep. Have a good day.

I wonder how the emus survived the big fires. That's amazing.
