This is the title of a discussion that will unfold on a tv channel. I am not aware what the discussion will be but if it is all about smart phones that make one dull I am fully with that thought
These ready reckoners will only make us lazy and our brain wil freeze just like what AI does.
I have two feature phones that let me talk and send messages. I have a digital camera that takes care of my passion for photography with several features I use Windows 10 I have reliable ISPs and life is a one big happy song.
Why do you need a smart phone?

My phone is already a necessity for me to go out. When I take the subway, I need to pay with my phone. When I take a taxi, I need the taxi app on my phone. When I can't find a way in a strange place, I need an electronic map and navigation. When I want to know which foods are nearby, I can use the app on my phone to search for nearby foods. Mobile phones have given us a lot of convenience.

@allknowing Yes, you're right. If you don't go out, you don't need them.

Smartphones are versatile devices that consolidate numerous functions into a single gadget. They enable online activities and facilitate banking transactions. They can be set up as alarms or reminders. A significant advantage is their portability, allowing you to make calls, browse the internet, and use them as cameras all in one.

To each their own When I am out I never feel the need of the Internet I have Amazon Pay where I make all the payments. And the rest I have mentioned in my post
And last but not the least I prefer a big screen which I get with my desktop

@allknowing Yes, I understand that some people prefer what they're accustomed to. Initially, I didn't value it much either, but as time passed and smartphones became smarter and more user-friendly than laptops/desktops, I started to recognize their utility. Particularly when you're on the move and can't take your desktop with you, a smartphone is the best tool for almost everything.

@rsa101 In my case it is not the question of getting used to something but whatever I have as they say 'delivers'

@allknowing It's possible for a smartphone to be connected to a large screen via Miracast or an HDMI cable, but some smartphones don't support HDMI.

I own a smartphone (gift of my husband) that I DO NOT use as a smartphone, but as a camera.
I have a dump phone that I use to talk and send messages, very simple phone with no other functions.
My husband does not even use a simple cellphone, he use our landline phone to talk and sends email instead of text messages.

When one is comfortable with simpler gadgets there is no reason why one should wait for upgrades.
